An Old Guy's ConcertSubmitted by Old Guy on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 - 12:06PMIt is amazing how many things a concert can mean. A chance to see a famous group or artist, revisiting memories from the past, seeing a new wave of music or sometimes they are just a special moment unto themselves. For me it is mostly the first two because I think by now, even though I still like all kinds of music, I am pretty much set in my ways musically. (Some might say I am just stuck in my ways in general). Recently though I believe a local concert meant more to me than any I have seen dating back to the late 60's. Well, it may not have topped Clapton but it equaled it. The concert was the Lynyrd Skynyrd/Kid Rock show recently at Lakewood Amphitheatre near Atlanta, Ga. While I have always loved Skynyrd and have grown to like Kid it was more the company I was with that made it special. You see, while I go by Old Guy on Shakefire I am also very fortunate and proud to be able to say that Pandora is my daughter and she took me to the concert as a Father's Day gift. Neither of us realized until we were there that it was the first time for both of us to see Skynyrd which made it even more special. Being able to spend time with a daughter is special enough but realizing that somehow I was able to share my love of music with her is even better. I never thought that as I played "name that group or song" on Saturday mornings going to softball or basketball games that it would have a true influence on her life. I just wanted her to love music, no matter what type. Now as I look at Pandora I will always see my little pony tailed softball player who could will herself to win because she hated to lose so much. However, I also see her as a very special lady that loves music. life and her dad. Thanks Pandora for a great new memory. Just a note on the concert. Skynyrd was just what I expected, a tribute to guns, drugs, women and true Southern rock and roll which I believe is the base of most of today's music. Their "Simple Man" tribute to the troops was especially touching. I must say Kid Rock surprised me. The energy he brought to the stage was amazing and the music wasn't bad either. I may be slowly becoming a fan. By the way, it was pretty easy to tell the Skynyrd fans from the Kid Rock fans. Skynyrd fan's seem to prefer not to wear shirts and Kid Rock fans seem to like to wear dumb little hats. It made it fun to people watch. Overall, a great show by both bands. And, a note to Pan, remember to just walk it off. |

Thank You Dad
I'm surprized that you were able to figure out how to post a blog Gibbs j/k. And of course you have to rub it in my face yet again that you have seen Clapton and I have not . I really enjoyed going with you, we haven't been to a concert together in years. Here's hoping to make it a regular thing.
