G.I. Joe : The Rise of Cobra (Official Thread)

I have been reading a little bit about this movie being made. At one point Mark Whalberg was going to be staring as Duke. I really hope that this move is done justice. it was such a big part of my childhood,a was Transformers. The last I heard was that Stephen Sommers(The Mummy, Van Helsing) was attached to direct. Also, for all of you that remember GI joe, they were going to at one point have GI Joe teamed up with Action Man, and there was not going to be any Cobra in the movie. I think the fans got heard and last I heard it was going to be based on the tyos as well as cartoon that we loved as kids.

If they did this movie without Cobra it would be a waste of time, money, and would just so suck. I'm a Cobra fan, mainly cause when I was a kid my brother, who is older, was always the good guy with all the toys. So every time we played I was Cobra and I had all the Cobra toys where he was GI Joe. The only time I got a GI Joe toy rather then Cobra was one time during christmas and I got the jet. My brother woke me up that morning freaking out he was so happy cause of course he thought it was his, until my parents came out and said no it was mine. For his birthday he got the Cobra jet that had the wings that flipped up. Those were good times. And it's got to be the original Cobra Commander, the one that had the silver face mask, not the maks that hung down like a curtain.

Has everyone heard the news that Ray Park(Darth Maul) has been cast as Snake Eyes? Sienna Miller is going to be the Baroness. I guess she will dye her hair but still not sure she is good casting. Park yes, Miller no.

Park will be fine as long as they keep Snake Eyes traditional where you do nto see his face and he does not talk. Now the other big question is where will they get their inspiration for the costumes....the cartoon, the figures, or the comic books? I for one hope that they just keep thaings traditional to what we know.

Word on the Grapevibe is that Duke has been cast and the actor who will play him will be Channing Tatum (She's The Man, A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints, Step It Up). I like the kid. i think he has a lot of potential to be a big star if only he'd start selecting better movies. The fact that this one will be directed by Sommers is a huge let down. Its basically going to be popcorn explosions and witty one liners. Hopefully they'll change their minds and find themselves a better director or else it just seems like they want this one out as fast as possible to make a few bucks.

More casting news. Dennis Quaid (General Hawk) , Arnold Vasloo (Zartan), and David Murray (Destro). Speculation possibly but we'll see.

Is anyone concerned that the cast may look more like models then soliders?

I am just looking at the female selection of Sienna Miller and Rachel Nichols as Shana "Scarlett" O'hara and getting concerned???

Am I alone here?

If you're expecting the kind of movie that can have normal looking people in it, you'll probably be disappointed. Those movies rely on character development, realism, and acting. This will most likely rely on things blowing up, nostalgia, loud top-40s music, and even larger things blowing up.

But hopefully they'll be some good action sequences in there, too. (You know, in between the gratuitous explosions. )

Karolina Isela Kurkova will be playing "Cover Girl", aka, Courtney A. Kreige: a former super-model-turned-solider. Okay this is a step back. Why do directors always choose percieved beauty over actual talent? Not to say that this woman isn't talented in the art of acting because I really don't know but I'm going to go ahead and make the assumption that she isn't that great of an actor.

Destro has been recast with none other then Doctor Who's Christopher Eccleston (28 Days Later, Gone In 60 Seconds). The role was originally cast with David Murray (Batman Begins)

I completely agree. I meant the cast is mostly skinny people vs muscular! It bothers me that the cast is looking wimpy!

There is no Vin Diesel or Wesley Snipes.
Where the hell did the muscles go?

I must say that I am fairly impressed with the fact that they are keeping the costumes "new old school". I am goign to resever the rest of my judgement until I see some others such as Zartan or Destro.
