Meanwhile, just when it starts to look like their goal is in sight, the stammering pals realizes that a much larger struggle is currently taking place, and that the future is looking particularly grim - not only for them, but for the entire human race as well. Jaw dropping visuals and great acting will make Snow White & The Huntsman an easy sell for anyone looking for an epic adventure.

A fine meal consists of three portions. Generally you start off with an appetizer, something like bread or chips. Nothing to fill anyone up. Just enough to wet the palate. Then, we move on to the main course: Steak, beef, chicken, etc. This is what everyone came for, the main attraction. It's not only the taste of the food, but also the filling nature of it. It leaves the consumer happy and fulfilled. But then comes the dessert. A sugary treat that compliments the previous portions in the right way, but not to distract the attention away from the main focus. All together, they form a perfect meal that everyone desires. But what happens when the dessert is brought out prior to the main course? Well, just ask Mirror Mirror, the sugary mediocre Snow White adaptation that failed to win over audiences. They underwent some harsh criticism, including that the story of Snow White shouldn't be adapted to something different. There's just one thing the starving critics haven't thought of: The main course hadn't arrived yet.

Snow White & The Huntsman is that main course.

Losing her mother at an early age, Snow White (Kristen Stewart) was told she embodied true beauty and brought happiness throughout the land. But once a mysterious woman, Ravenna (Charlize Theron), wins the heart of Snow's father, that happiness seems to fade. The sudden assassination of the King leads to Ravenna being named as Queen, with her first notion being to banish Snow White to the north tower for life. Once Snow has reached the age of 17, Queen Ravenna seeks out her heart to not only become the fairest of them all, but immortal to boot. Snow plans an escape and heads for shelter inside the Dark Forest. Knowing that her magic has no grounds in that land, Ravenna sends a drunkard huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) to retrieve her step-daughter in return to bring back the huntsman's dead wife. The huntsman heads into the forest to find the young girl, but has no idea of what is in store for him.

Snow White & The Huntsman is a different breed than Mirror Mirror or many other films at that. The tone that director Rupert Sanders chose is what will win audiences over in the theaters: Dark with a sense of unforgiving nature spell out the world that Snow and Ravenna inhabit. We're used to hearing the evil queen mention the necessity of Snow White's heart. Yet, watching Ravenna eat the hearts of 4 or 5 birds gives one a different picture than we previously imagined. Obviously, this causes some great imagery for the dark forest, displaying anywhere from giant bridge trolls to tree gargoyles. The scenery of this world is beautiful, yet terrifying. There is a specific scene where Snow and her band of misfits walk through an enchanted meadow that will drop jaws. The CGI is some of the best I've seen in recent memory. With the necessary work to transform regular sized men into 3 foot dwarves and create a fairy infested garden, Sanders has really created a rich, lavish world for his characters to work within. Yet, the scenery isn't the only quality of the film that stands out.

The characters of SW&TH aren't the most complicated of folk. Wanting to rule due to an unfortunate past, losing faith in the world after watching your true love die. They are simple character arches, yet the connection given to each character to the other makes a fine system of complimenting each other. Ravenna's evil nature taking advantage of the weak, easily-controlled mind of the huntsman to fetch the fighting-sitting-down Snow White is just one of the many examples that make the film so easy to pull off. Even with these arches, Sanders has something under his sleeve. His ace in the hole: The dwarves. It already helped having an excellent cast of actors to portray the rebel bandits (Bob Hoskins, Ian McShane, Nick Frost, Toby Jones, Ray Winstone), but using their personalities to utilize every great aspect of the script proves that Sanders had enough faith in these half-pint heroes to label them as his winning stallion. The story does drag a bit, due to a decreasingly interesting script, only to be picked back up by the 8 (yes, 8) vigilantes who actually kick the script back into high gear with their disagreements and humor.

With a great vision and great characters to boot, what isn't to enjoy about the feature debut for Rupert Sanders? The stone faced elephant in the room would have to be Kristen Stewart playing Snow White. Stewart gives the best acting performance I've seen her do, but it's still not enough to match her up with her great co-stars. Then again, pinning her up against Charlize Theron and making her tag along with the God of Thunder himself Chris Hemsworth wasn't the best idea to display how Stewart can hold her own. It may not have helped that both Hemsworth and Theron are in top form here and make for some great moments together. Stewart was an obvious choice, in part to the obvious crossover of Twilight fans checking out the film. Perhaps this was one of the reasons Universal gave such a large project to a first time feature film director. But it's hard not to be happy with the outcome when we're introduced to an obvious talent like Sanders.

Evil dark creatures, a heart-eating queen and wise cracking dwarves are enough to win me over, but jaw dropping visuals and great acting will make Snow White & The Huntsman an easy sell for anyone looking for an epic adventure. So put on those bibs, get those knives ready and get ready to wash away the sugary taste of dessert: Dinner is served.

Over its near 50 year lifespan, The Adventures of Tintin created many memorable characters that were brought to life through its comic book pages. The franchise has been a cultural phenomenon that has spanned the likes of television, radio, and film. It is only fitting, then, that acclaimed director Steven Spielberg team up with Peter Jackson to bring the first performance captured 3D film of the series to the big screen.

Jamie Bell stars as the young journalist/detective Tintin as he embarks on the most dangerous story yet. The film combines three storylines from the original Tintin books, and has Tintin teaming up with the drunken Captain Haddock (Andy Serkis) in search for the legendary treasure of the Unicorn, a ship carrying precious cargo that was lost at sea. They’re not alone in the search as Ivan Ivanovitch Sakharine has been attempting to decipher the mystery of the Unicorn for years and will stop at nothing to reach his goal. The Adventures of Tintin is filled with adventure, danger, and mystery, or as Tintin would put it, just another story that needs to be told.

The film is Steven Spielberg’s first venture into animated features. You wouldn’t notice, though, as it looks absolutely fantastic. Without a doubt, the visuals are stunning and would give even Pixar a run for their money. Character animations look realistic and there are plenty of lush landscapes that showcase the beauty of the technology. The motion capture style animation of Tintin works best to bring the pages of the comic book alive. Had it been a full live-action film, I don’t think it would have worked as well.

While the visuals are some of the best around, the same cannot be said for the story. Spielberg does his best to portray Tintin as this young, Indiana Jones type lad whose sense for adventure overcomes all else, but ultimately it isn’t very convincing. The plot is highly predictable and aside from Captain Haddock, there doesn’t seem to be any motivation for the characters. Tintin constantly puts himself in danger, and it’s never really clear why. Also, why must all bad guys be horrible at shooting a gun? If Tintin can manage to take down a flying airplane with a single shot from a pistol, then I think some bad guys could manage to shoot a moving target 15 feet away with a machine gun. The film falls in line with all the stereotypical aspects of the adventure genre.

That being said, it’s difficult not to be drawn into Tintin’s world. The bumbling detectives Thomson and Thompson (Simon Pegg and Nick Frost) are good for a laugh whenever they appear, and Tintin’s trusty Wire Fox Terrier sidekick Snowy always manages to save the day. The detail given to Snowy’s character really makes him come alive as a human, rather than just another canine companion.

The Adventures of Tintin may not be Steven Spielberg’s best work but it does introduce the Tintin franchise to a whole new generation of viewers. It’s a visual masterpiece, and while it could use a bit of work on the story, the film gives you that sense of adventure you once got reading the comics.

Not long ago, maybe less then a year, I reacquainted myself with the works of Nick Frost and Simon Pegg. Basically Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, and Hot Fuzz. The first time I watched their two films I hated them. As time went by my taste in comedy changed up and when I revisited these two films I absolutely loved them. That being said when I heard about Paul I was ecstatic seeing as how this time the film they both starred in was penned by both of them (instead of just by Pegg who collaborated with long time friend Edgar Wright on both of their previous films), plus it was being directed by Superbad’s Greg Mottola. That’s a winning combination right? How could it go wrong.

As time went on I heard nothing about Paul. No one telling me to avoid the film in theaters and no one telling me it was a must see. I heard nothing. I eventually saw it anyway and walked away very disappointed. For starters the film is just awkward. You go into one of these movies to have a laugh, hell, have so many they bring tears to your eyes and you feel like you’ve done a thousand sit ups by the time your done. Not so much. I got a few chuckles out of the film but felt its tendency to try and mix very immature humor with attacks on religion counterproductive. It simply wasn’t done intelligently enough to warrant writing a commentary into the films core that exploits religious fallacies while still not taking these moments to seriously. It created a lot of “should I laugh or should I not laugh” moments which faltered the comedic timing of the film. The only time I managed to get a chuckle out was when the film went off the far end of it’s comedy aspect; Paul gets felt up and reacts, Ruth learns to cuss or gets high, Paul attempts to ask Clive if he and Graeme are gay. These are momentary laughs but the film, overall, lacks memorable comedic moments.

QUALITY:
Aside from a 1% margin of error in this transfer (if that) Paul can be placed up there as one of the finest looking BD transfers your going to find. Black levels are completely solid, color is amazing, clarity and sharpness are absolutely amazing. I was worried that Paul would end up looking like crap considering how amazingly fine tuned the picture is but I have to give the team that handled Paul credit, he looks amazing even in HD. So what’s with the error? During the scene in which Paul and his crew are hiding from special agents in a small town skin tone goes a bit pink, almost red, as Haggard and O’Reilly are seen walking down the street. That’s pretty much it, as far as I could detect. Audio is a very accessible DTS-HD MA 5.1 that offers up a fantastic cinematic experience complete with immersion factors, ease on dialogue, and space for the musical aspect of the film.

~Hilarious Bloopers: I found them to be, just okay, nothing really all that great. Like a previous film I reviewed that had bloopers (Be Cool) this one seemed to staged and put together in some parts. Natural is best.

~Simon’s Sill Faces: I think they may have ran out of idea’s here. Very easily this could have fit right into the Bloopers package. Just Pegg making faces at the camera.
