Turning 21 is a big day for most people but for Tim Lake (played by Domhnall Gleeson) it's the day that changes his life forever from that point on. On his 21st birthday Tim's father James (played by Bill Nighy) tells him that every male in the family line has the ability to travel in time after they turn 21. At first Tim thinks his father is having a big joke on him but his father insists that it's the truth and that he should try it. Believing his father to be crazy Tim reluctantly tries to travel back in time and discovers that he has the ability to travel in time whenever he feels like it. When he approaches his father again, James tells Tim about what the other men in the family used the ability on and then he asks Tim what will he use it for. Love is what Tim wants, the love of a woman that so far in his life he has not been able to get. Promptly putting the ability to use when a girl who is his sisters friend stays over at his home for a few months, Tim learns that even with being able to travel in time he can't make a girl love him. Let down with this Tim goes on with his life by moving to London to become a lawyer but while there he meets Mary (played by Rachel McAdams), a girl who is perfect for him and they both fall for each other. Only when Tim travels back in time to help a friend he changes the moment that he met Mary and now he must use the time traveling to find a way to win over Mary again.
