Denis Villeneuve to Direct 'Dune' Reboot

Arrival and Sicario director Denis Villeneuve has officially signed on to direct the upcoming Dune series film project. Brian Herbert, the son of Dune author Frank Herbert, announced the news on Twitter saying, "It's official -- Legendary Pictures has signed the very talented Denis Villeneuve to direct the exciting new DUNE series film project."

Legendary Entertainment secured both the film and television rights to the Dune book franchise from Frank Herbert's estate back in November. There's no indication yet as to if Legendary plans to develop a television series as well. The Dune series film project will be produced by Thomas Tull, Mary Parent and Cale Boyter. Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert will serve as executive producers.

The 1965 science fiction novel has been adaptated multiple times, with the most notable one being David Lynch's 1984 film. There was also a 2000 miniseries by John Harrison that aired on the Sci-Fi Channel. Denis Villeneuve's next film, Blade Runner 2049, is set to release in October 2017.
