Disney Announces Casting for 'Artemis Fowl'

Disney has announced the cast for it upcoming live-action adaptation of Artemis Fowl. Descended from a long line of criminal masterminds, the film follows 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl who finds himself in a battle of strength and cunning against a powerful, hidden race of fairies who may be behind his father’s disappearance. It is being directed by Kenneth Branagh and produced by Branagh and Judy Hofflund.

For the titular role of Artemis Fowl, Branagh has selected newcomer Ferdia Shaw after an extensive search that saw over 1,200 candidates. Joining Shaw are Josh Gad as Mulch Diggums, a kleptomaniacal dwarf who works for the fairies—and himself, Judi Dench as Commander Root, the steely leader of the fairy police force, Lara McDonneell as Captain holly Short, the elf hero, and Nonso Anozie as Butler, Fowl's formidable bodyguard.

Production on Artemis Fowl will begin early next year in the U.K. with a release date set for August 9, 2019.
