Easter Pineapples?

In the Psych pilot, Shawn reached for a pineapple in the car and asked Gus to cut it for him. Since then, there has been an appearance or mention of pineapple in every episode.

USA Network’s clever and fun buddy detective dramedy Psych returns for its fourth season Friday August 7 with “Extradition: British Columbia.” Fake psychic but real police consultant Shawn Spencer is back to solve crimes with his often reluctant and always amusing partner Gus, this time bringing their special brand of mayhem to Canada where infamous jewel thief Pierre Despereux (the ever-fabulous Cary Elwes) is on the loose. Shawn recognizes him from Detective Lassiter’s “Most Wanted” wall and wants to nab both Despereux and any potential reward money. Things don’t go as planned, and soon both Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) and Detective Juliet O’Hara (Maggie Lawson) join Shawn and Gus in British Columbia.

If you’re new to Psych, Shawn learned mad observational skills from his father Henry (Corbin Bernsen) when he was a kid, and he uses those abilities to run Psych, a “psychic” detective agency, with best buddy Gus, a pharmaceutical sales rep. Needless to say, his father is less than pleased by Shawn’s deception, but he often lends a helping hand anyway. Shawn and Gus assist the Santa Barbara Police Department, specifically Detectives Lassiter and O’Hara and Sheriff Vick (Kirsten Nelson) in their odder cases.

Season three ended on a serious note with the kidnapping of Shawn’s mother, but Psych’s season four seems to be back to its normal light-hearted mood. Long-running storylines like Shawn and Juliet’s will-they-or-won’t-they dance are touched upon, and newer storylines like Shawn’s relationship with Abigail (Rachel Leigh Cook) are referenced. The cast’s remarkable chemistry is in full effect and Lassie is hilarious in his revulsion at the Canadian police’s belief that Shawn is his boss. Henry is only in the episode briefly, but his cranky visit to Canada to pay Shawn’s bail is memorably funny.

Psych (not to be confused with The Mentalist, that other fake psychic show that is awesomely referenced in “Extradition: British Columbia”) is better known for its banter, rapid-fire pop culture references, and cast chemistry than for its plots, but Gus and Shawn’s game of cat and mouse with Pierre Despereux is twisty and fast-paced with a high-speed ski chase that evokes the 80s classic movie Better off Dead while introducing the instant-classic pizza move. The bromantic getaway subplot with Sean and an increasingly uncomfortable Gus is fun and a final scene between Shawn and Juliet is sweet and true to their characters.

“Extradition: British Columbia” has plenty to make both long-time Psych fans and new viewers happy. If you’re looking for an hour of quick-witted banter, bromance, and 80s pop culture, you won’t find better than Psych, and it’s an easy show to pick up, even after three seasons. Season four looks to have even more action than prior seasons with upcoming storylines which include a western town in danger of a corporate takeover and guest stars like James Brolin and Sendhil Ramamurthy (Heroes). There are few hours of television filled with such pure, unadulterated fun, and few better ways to end a long week, so make a point to watch Psych on USA Friday nights at 10pm, starting August 7.

USA hand delivered to us (on a plate of gold!) an exclusive clip from the premiere episode of season 3.5 of PSYCH, titled "Six Feet Under the Sea". Shawn and Gus are up to their usual detective shenanigans only this time it involves a dead sea lion named Shabby. When Shawn is dragged to the funeral for the sea lion, he uses his superb observational skills and realizes that foul play was involved and that Shabby was murdered, leading the two into more trouble than they bargained for.

Psych: Season 3.5 (Preview)

What makes Psych so hilarious is the relationship between Shawn and Gus. Gus is always the cautious, reserve type while Shawn is more adventurous. In "Six Feet Under the Sea", Shawn attempts to fulfill a childhood dream of riding a dolphin while solving the crime.The episode also features a competition between the two to win over the heart of April, an attractive aquarium worker who believes that there was something wrong surrounding Shabby's untimely death. Ted McGinley is a guest star as well.

At its core, Psych continues to make audiences laugh with its witty humor and goofy characters. It would have been good to see more of Detective Lassiter. He was hilarious during his little time onscreen. Also, the show is beginning to stray from its title. Shawn's 'psychic' abilities are starting to become less and less apparent. There are a few instances where he uses it but for the most part, it's a simple detective story. Still, despitethe differences, Psych remains one of USA's top shows.
