Recess Monkey’s latest outing provides young listeners with the imaginative adventure of sea living. The album hits on topics like height, friendships, but mostly just having a lot of fun with the possible and the imaginary.
I looked the band up on Amazon and was surprised to see that they have a ton of albums under their belt. That makes sense as they sound very comfortable playing as a unit and in any sort of style they choose. You’ve got disco funk, indie rock, a polka sounding tune, and even some hip hop, all encompassing some pretty awesome narratives featuring the sea as the main star.
I laughed a lot during this CD. It brought me back to my childhood when a seagull flew off with my lunch on a school field trip (Seagull) or worrying about my height growing up (shrimp). It also reminded me of my kids (Walkie Talkies), and in some strange way, Wes Andersons Life Aquatic. I can totally see any of these songs being a soundtrack B Side. It was an all around good time, and I listened to it alone, that I think kids will absolutely love for the fact that it’s silly fun but the music is no slouch. A great performance by Recess Monkey that can transport your kids imaginations to a world where anything is possible and adults will enjoy the music as well. I highly suggest.
