Madagascar 2 has its heart in the right place but not enough creativity to pull away from being simply a clichéd conglomeration of feel good movies.  In the sequel to the hit film Madagascar Alex, Marty, Melman, and Gloria find themselves in familiar company but in a new land, Africa. The film begins with some awkward humor, the kind that is mostly used by another Dreamworks giant, Shrek. Its humor that borders inappropriate, obviously intended for adults, disguised as quick little moments that are supposed to go over kids heads. I honestly hate when kids films feel they need to appease adults this way and it was a disappointment. The real humor lies mostly with the group of penguins and the primates whose witty banter keeps the story alive. As for the main characters they all find themselves in clichéd storylines that have been done to death before; Finding ones self, making a loved one proud, finding true love, etc etc. I wasn’t impressed with the character storylines and the entire beginning of the film up until the characters arrive in Africa seemed like a mad rush for laughs with jokes galore coming hit and miss. Sadly I felt the sequel fell short of the first film. The film is entertaining and you’ll laugh but in the end you just might find yourself unsatisfied with the films substance.
