The following is a review of the Blu-ray release. For a more in-depth review of the film itself, please read Shakefire’s theatrical review.

QUALITY:

The Blu-ray features the film in 1080p with a widescreen format of 2.39:1 so you can expect black bars on the majority of TV setups. The picture quality is clear and crisp, favoring warm oranges and reds to capture the California countryside. The audio quality is solid, with a few dips in the levels in certain scenes here and there, but it’s not too much cause for concern. Overall, there’s nothing out of the ordinary regarding the quality of the Blu-ray besides a few hiccups here and there.

BONUS FEATURES:

  • McFarland Reflections
  • “Juntos” Music Video
  • Inspiring McFarland
  • Deleted & Extended Scenes

The most interesting of the special features is the McFarland Refelctions, which has Kevin Costner sitting down with the real coach Jim White and members of the 1987 cross country team as they talk about the true events that inspired the film. The “Juntos” music video, performed by Juanes, was nothing particularly special, as it’s something that’s been readily available on the internet for months now. Inspiring McFarland was good, although it seemed a bit like a Disney ad that reiterated a few key points from the McFarland Reflections video. The deleted scenes provide more details about some of the other runners on the team and also the White’s adjusting to their new community. They definitely weren’t necessary in the bigger picture of the film, hence why they’re deleted scenes, but it’s nice to see them included on the Blu-ray.
