Rebel Wilson has teamed up with late-night host Conan O’Brien to bring the new comedy Super Fun Night to ABC this fall. The series stars Wilson as Kimmie Boubie, a somewhat of an outcast who typically enjoys the end of the work week hanging out with her other two single friends at what they call Friday Night Fun Nights. All that changes, however, when she is promoted at the law firm she works at and tries to fit in with the social in-crowd.

You would think that a show from the collective minds of Wilson and O’Brien would be comedy genius but unfortunately, Super Fun Night isn’t all that super or fun. Kimmie is introduced as this socially awkward person who spends her weekends throwing rock parties (the mineral kind) or dressing up like troll dolls with her two equally awkward friends, Helen-Alice (Lauren Ash) and Marika (Liza Lapira). Rebel Wilson definitely plays up the role, but it’s not all that interesting. It’s all material we’ve seen before and done better, even by her, in some cases.

After being promoted at work, she meets the charming attorney Richard (Kevin Bishop) and the two share a touching moment discussing princess warrior statues. Wanting to get to know Richard better, she accepts his after work drinks invite. There’s good chemistry between the two and I think there’s something here, but the first episode simply doesn’t have enough time to really get going. There are a few good laughs, but the show lacks substance. I’ll give it a few more episodes before I pass it off as just another sitcom, but I’m not too impressed with what I’ve seen thus far.
