The Mummy (BLU-RAY)

The Mummy

On Blu-Ray:
Tuesday, July 22, 2008
Running Time:
125 minutes

This franchise is one of the few that count itself as a “remake” while completely changing the plot, characters and overall feel of the movie, and still remains entertaining.  Brendan Fraser’s decidedly “dull” performance actually fits somehow into the high-energy movie.

The quality is unimpressive.  I’m not sure if it was a conscious decision because of the film’s inspiration, but it looks more like a 50s movie that was re-formatted into high definition rather than a newer movie that doesn’t need as much work.  The sound is, however, pretty convincing and sounds great in 7.1 or 5.1.

Commentaries, Deleted Scenes, Featurettes

The movie surprised everyone by actually being good but the transfer quality is pretty disappointing.  The special features (including a new one featuring footage of The Mummy 3) look so bad that you feel as if you are watching a VHS, which isn’t a big deal to those among us that don’t care for special features too much.
