Currently in the midst of its second season on ABC, science-fiction sitcom The Neighbors is set to air a holiday-themed episode entitled "A Christmas Story" this Friday night at 8:30 PM ET/7:30 PM CT. For those unfamiliar with the program, The Neighbors follows the Weaver family who recently moved to a gated community in New Jersey. Expecting a peaceful existence, the family is thrown for a loop when they discover that all their neighbors are aliens named after famous atheletes. Although I'm not an avid viewer of the show, "A Christmas Story" was a half-hour of enjoyable fun that stands tall as the best holiday-themed television episode I have seen so far this season.

With Christmas approaching, "A Christmas Story" begins with the Weaver family and their neighboring alien family preparing for the season. Having little knowledge of Christmas, aliens Larry Bird (Simon Templeman, James Bond Jr.) and Jackie Joyner-Kersee (Toks Olagundoye) hope to borrow everything including a tree and lights from the Weavers. Meanwhile, Debbie Weaver (Jami Gertz, Still Standing) and Marty Weaver (Lenny Venito, War of the Worlds) are busy deciphering their children's congested Christmas wish lists including a Princess Leia doll and the girl from the Blurred Lines video. Will both sets of parents be able to provide a satisfying Christmas for their respective families?

Much like I try to do with all new programs, I checked out the first few episodes of The Neighbors back when it first premiered. I found the show funny and entertaining, but it was so high-concept that I figured ABC would never get behind it or give it a second season. If "A Christmas Story" is any indication, the program has become stronger over time and this episode may just hook me as a regular viewer. Rather than use the season as a cheap plot device, The Neighbors focuses on a major aspect of the holidays: finding that perfect gift for someone special in your life. If you haven't checked out The Neighbors before, this is a great time to start. Highly Recommended.
