Hardboiled Wonderland is comprised of Percy Howard and Martin Birke. “As Small as a World as Large as Alone” is their debut album. Each band member has worked on other projects before and have a core fan base, but this is their first time collaborating on a whole album together. They have a unique sound as Percy is on vocals and Martin orchestrates the instrumentals.

Each song on the album pretty much had the same feel and critique from me. The instrumentals on the whole album were awesome, but the lyrics and vocals were in desperate need of improvements. Most of the songs had an 80’s or old school hip-hop vibe mixed with some dance and electronica. The instrumentals carried the whole album and they were the only saving grace. On the other side, Percy’s vocals were off-key, had limited range, and the awkward lyrics didn’t help at all. The only song where his voice was bearable would be “Little Queen of Spades,” which was also my favorite song on the whole album because of the fast pace and up-tempo beats. Otherwise, I would have been happier if the whole album were just the instrumentals.

I have never heard of the band and its members, so I was not really sure what to expect when reviewing this album. Each song started out good, but when Percy starts singing, my opinion changed for the worse. They do have a unique sound, but it was not all a good one. Martin is a very talented artist and I do plan on checking out his other work, but I will not be looking up Percy Howard anytime soon. For those reasons, I am giving this CD a “D+.”

pardon?

It is one thing to express a personal and of course always subjective taste, but it is another to downright discredit someone else work.

Being someone who actually particularly enjoys Percy Howard's singing style I can still understand that his singing probably isn't everybody's thing, since it is indeed very unique. you can never please everybody.

in honest capability of self reflection you could have written exactly that. not you style, not really bearable for you. but instead your choice of words comes across rather judgmental and pseudo objective. what for? Just for fun?

Unfortunately that doesn't work out either
I admit bad or cynical reviews are sadly often more entertaining if well written, but this here isn't it.
such negativity should be packaged in a little bit more than just mediocre blah, don't you think? complaining awkwardly with a limited range of expression about others supposed awkwardness and limited range is just unintentionally ironic :)

Novice critic

Paul ,

You obviously have very little music experience, your review is so childlike in its lack of critical objectiveness. Percy Howard is classically trained singer who has worked extensively with such famous names as Bill Laswell, Robert Fripp, Oz Fritz, Buckethead and many other world known artists. There is NO out of key singing on this record, these guys have been making records and touring the world since before you probably could speak. Your lack of understanding the amazing job these guys have done by combining old school hip-hop and modern electronica with one of the worlds best soul and rock singers only proves your naivet'e in the world of music genres. I suggest you start studying music for a few decades before continue to "review" art that is way beyond your American Idol scope of comprehension. You child.
