Artist: Hollywood Undead Album: American Tragedy Redux Members: Charlie Scene, J-Dog, Johnny 3 Tears, Funny Man, Da Kurlzz, Danny Genre: DJ/Dance, Pop, Rap/Hip Hop, Rock Label: A&M Octone Tracks: 10 Type: Digital Release Date: November 21, 2011 Rating: ( )Grade: D+ I had the pleasure of reviewing Hollywood Undead’s last release, American Tragedy. The album displayed a bit of maturity on the part of the band, not to much, but there seemed to be a boost in their production that said they were starting to take their music more seriously then before. In any case it was enjoyable, filled with proper club tracks, and their ability to throw out flow across tight beats just made the album far from boring. Unfortunately the remix album for American Tragedy titled American Tragedy Redux is a mish mash of really good club remixes but also quite a few hard to listen to remixes that either sound like a ray gun on rapid fire spinning uncontrollably through the room or something that doesn’t sound anything like Hollywood Undead. First off is Levitate (Digital Dog Club Mix). The title says it all. It’s a club track which works within that context. Electronica infused but a bit unproduced sounding. The chorus for the track sounds a bit off and the remix has a repetitive sound to it that’s completely ignorable and wouldn’t work as a track that you just want to listen to all on its own just for the hell of it. Next is Comin In Hot (Wideboys Club Remix). A bit slow coming out of the gate but once the track kicks in its great. Absolutely a club track that grabs hold of you and demands that you move your ass on the dance floor. It also pairs well with the lyrical flow on the original track. Apologize (Buffalo Bill’s Die Young Remix) is a track that has potential. It starts off pretty good with a mix of electronica and a solid sounding acoustic guitar, but eventually fades into a bunch of repetitive bleeps that make it tough to stay with the track and its repetitive use of the songs chorus. Following this track is This is My Town (Andrew W.K. Remix) which sounds like some sort of terrible 80’s hair rock that I simply couldn’t stomach. WTF were they thinking is all that comes to mind on this track. Coming Back Down (Beatnick & K-Salaam Remix) is a return to cognitive remixes on the album. The track has a very pop feel to it but its extremely catchy and with a very indie style to it. Some fans may find it a bit too tame but I liked it. Following is Hear Me Now (Jonathan Davis Remix). It’s intentionally off for some reason. I couldn’t understand why but it is. When it’s more coherent it simply sounds like a Linkin Park remix. I Don’t Want To Die (Borgore Remix). This track makes me want to poke a hot poker through my ears. WTF!? Le Deux (Dr. Eargasm Remix) is another remix that has the potential to be great but this one follows in the same suit as the last and just sounds like someone fell asleep at the wheel for this particular remix. Lights Out (The Juggernaut vs. Obsidian Remix). Yet another terrible remix. I’m not sure what the hell went on with the back end of this remix album but you can add this to the list of remixed tracks I won’t be listening to again. Fortunately the album ends on a good note with Been To Hell…And Back (KMFDM Remix). You can always count on KMFDM to do something interesting. It has a bit of cheese factor with a guitar solo tossed in for measure but I liked it. In short this is an album that’s not necessity for fans, just hardcore fans, I guess. It has its little gems but mostly this thing could have been whittled down to an E.P. or maybe scattered singles. As always final judgment is yours.
