After filming “Titanic,” James Cameron is back directing and starring in a documentary about Titanic. He lead an expedition to explore the Titanic in 2001 and the film, “Ghosts of the Abyss” was released in theaters in 2003. For the first time ever, “Ghosts of the Abyss” has been released in 3-D and Blu-ray formats to give fans of the movie “Titanic” and the ship Titanic something new to satisfy their appetites for the historical ship. The documentary is narrated by Bill Paxton, who also had a role in the movie “Titanic.” James and Bill are joined by a huge team of specialists, scientists, and historians to see if they can uncover more mysteries that lie within Titanic.

I thought this was a very informative and interesting documentary about Titanic. There were some slow moments, but they were easily offset by the special and unique visuals that only such a special ship can provide. The picture quality was really crisp and the 3-D was a nice enhancement to my viewing experience. It was a bit more subtle for most of the documentary, but the depth of some scenes felt realistic. The music was mostly good and helped set the overall mood of the documentary, but I thought they could have done better than the 80’s Euro-pop being played in the background on some scenes.

There were several comedic moments in the documentary, which I felt did a good job of breaking up the slow moments. I loved all the state-of-the-art technology used and computer animation used to reenact the memories of what possibly happened on the final night of the Titanic. They also did a good job of giving you some background on some of the passengers. I was a bit disappointed that they did not include more bonus content. Besides a featurette, a prank video, and some trailers, they chose not to include anything else. Overall, I thought “Ghosts of the Abyss” was a good documentary with some minor issues. For those reasons, I am giving this documentary a "B-.”
