IMAX theaters have been showing good quality and educational films at places like museums of human history and culture, science museums, or aquariums. Naturally, this DVD version does not give a cinematic experience like IMAX theaters offer, but a few special features make up for it.

Mummies - Secrets of the Pharaohs is interesting throughout, making 40 minutes seem almost too short. It does a good job combining educational facts and entertaining myths together. The dramatic and mesmerizing voice of Christopher Lee is perfect for the narration as his deep voice adds eerie atmosphere. Lee informs about several notable Pharaohs such as Ramesses The Great and Tutankhamun, the reasons why the Egyptians made them mummies, and their beliefs. We will hear from experts like Dr. Bob Brier, an American Egyptologist who explains their mummification process. The production quality is great.  The re-enactment scenes do not look phony or cheap, and as the special feature “Making of Documentary Shot in HD” reveals, the IMAX cameras take advantage of capturing details of ancient artifacts and magnificent views like the famous three pyramids in Cairo.

Language and words used in this documentary are not complicated at all so that even young viewers should be able to follow. This is a great introductory documentary for anyone who is interested in Egyptian history. However, there are a few scenes featuring real unveiled and unwrapped mummies (not CGI) and these could be frightening, thus, I suggest parents to view the DVD themselves before showing it to any preteen children.

IMAX:Mummies:Secret of the Pharaohs

I saw this film on IMAX at Fernbank Museum in Atlanta, and yes it is spectacular when the cinematographer panned some of the scenes in Egypt. I am glad this film will be on DVD.
