Title: Orphan Edition: Digital Copy Special Edition Genre: Suspense Starring: Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard, Isabelle Fuhrman, Cch Pounder, Jimmy Bennett Director: Jaume Collet-Serra Studio: Warner Bros. Runtime: 123 Minutes Release Date: October 27, 2009 Format: BLU-RAY Discs: 2 Notes: Includes Digital Copy MPAA Rating: Rating: () Grade: D+ EVIL SHARES A BIRTHDAY According to the Estonian mental institute records, Esther was born on April the 20th - Hitler's birthday. The Omen, it is not. There are a lot of things wrong with this "creepy kid" thriller, many of which I cannot go into without delving into the post-Sixth Sense worthy M. Night Shyamalan "twist" ending. QUALITY: BONUS FEATURES: Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard are both extremely likeable actors that found themselves roped into a horrible script (assumingly, the result of some kind of dare?). The bonus features in this set are pathetic at best and the quality is only so-so. Add that into the lackluster and slow moving flick with so many holes that you will be more than irritated by the end of this looong movie (over two hours, for a thriller, that's WAY too long), and you have a release that really isn't worth the purchase. The only thing salvageable here is the surprising turn by the adorable newcomer Isabelle Fuhrman, pulling off a Russian accent so believable, you don't think for a second that she is a 10 year old American girl. Omened Orphan
Okay I sort of agree with the review but let's be honest for a wee second. How far into suspension of disbelief must viewers delve into before the director realizes we aren’t buying it? I don’t want to give the film away so I won’t but believe me – I was not convinced in the least. I was too suspended into Esther to embark on the transformation.
The ‘something is wrong’ that plagues Esther is one of the most original horror plots this year but the director only managed to deflate the film visually. You’ll understand this more once you’ve viewed it for yourself.
As a fan of horror it almost hurt my feelings once I was thumped on the head with the ending.
