Upon completing his debut album, The Six Wives of Henry VIII, Wakeman wrote a letter requesting permission to perform the piece live at Hampton Court Palace. 36 years later Wakeman was given permission on the 500th Anniversary of King Henry VIII. Probably one of the most boring concert films I have had to sit through unfortunately.
QUALITY:
There are some factors to take into account why I feel the transfer for this particular BD is a little shoddy. For starters either someone was asleep at the wheel while operating the fog machine or Wakeman had the unfortunate luck of being bombarded by natural fog. The smoky environment is lit up by the lighting which puts a horrible discolorization on the orchestra and again, kind of nulls out the lighting all together. When this problem does not dominate the show the picture is actually pretty good when the effects of the show do not damper the picture. Sound quality is fantastic. The mix manages to give voice to each section of Wakeman’s monster construction of choir, Orchestra, band, and himself.
BONUS FEATURES:
There is only one bonus feature titled Behind the Scenes With Rick which Wakeman proves himself a jovial character with a fantastic sense of humor. Running about 16+ you get a rundown on the show, Wakeman’s process for the original album, as well as a few moments of absolute hilarity as he makes fun of his band.
