Title: Superman/Batman: Public Enemies Starring: Eric Bauza, Xander Berkeley, Clancy Brown, Corey Burton, LeVar Burton Director: Sam Liu Studio: Warner Home Video Runtime: 67 mins Release Date: September 29, 2009 Format: DVD Discs: 2 MPAA Rating: Rating: () Grade: B+ So what we’ve got hear is the latest in line of direct-to-DVD animated films from DC Comics. This release follows on the heels of Batman: Gotham Knight, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern: First Flight. Given the recent success of all things comic-related at the box office, DC is taking an interesting approach, creating and selling these straight to the home video market. Now just in case you hear “direct-to-DVD” and automatically think cheap or low budget, those descriptions don’t apply here. The animation is solid, the story is well-written (and based on the comic arc of the same title), and there’s terrific voice talent involved bringing the characters to life: Tim Daly, Kevin Conroy, LeVar Burton, Xander Berkeley, John C. McGinley, among others. The basic story here is that Lex Luthor has risen to the role of president of the United States and started recruiting superheroes to support and aid his administration. Naturally, Superman and Batman are very suspicious of his motives and soon find themselves the targets of a government-sanctioned manhunt. The fun goes from there, including a cool sequence involving more character cameos than you shake a stick at. The rest of this set has a bunch of special features, behind-the-scenes clips, trailers and other fun stuff. This is a pretty nice release and definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan of comics in general or Superman or Batman specifically. |
