Amber is beautiful, popular, and on the cheerleading squad. Thayer is into metal, is an outcast, and is always being sent to the principal’s office. Based on outward appearances they couldn’t be more different. However on the inside they understand each better than they could have predicted. Sharing a creative writing class they can see into each other’s souls at how much pain they are going through. Amber’s family ignores her completely and Thayer’s family is both physically and verbally abusive. Over time their connection grows; but as with most high school relationships it is unable to withstand rumors and cliques.

This movie is based on a true story and I am curious what parts are true. The relationship between the two main characters grows slowly catching them both off guard. How they interact, the pressures they feel at school, the classes, the friends, etc. took me back to that awkward time of trying to find yourself and figure out life. It was easy to connect to feelings they had. As the abuses they both face come out more and more you feel for both Amber and Thayer. The story continues well after their time in high school, and even though they had both moved on with their lives they still shared a connection. But it seems that their love is one that can never be.

It is a touching story and the acting is exceptional. The quality of the footage, the sets and what not are very low budget; but that just adds to the gritty realism of the movie. The ending I felt was right for this story; but it didn’t get as much attention as the set up. It uses subtly throughout so if you are wanting something that is in your face, everyone crying, over the top drama you are looking in the wrong place.
