The Messengers is something of a mix between Cold Creek Manor and Stir of Echoes but without the star-power of the former and the tense originality of the latter. Despite having B-actor heavyweights Dylan McDermott and John Corbett, the best actor(s) ends up, surprisingly, being twin 5-year olds Evan and Theodore Turner. Penelope Ann Miller’s detachment from her daughter is seemingly childish and hateful, rather than the normal distance from a teenager that is seen in the real world. Directors Danny and Oxide Pang fail miserably in their first U.S. venture despite coming in with enormous horror/thriller cred.
Quality:
Disappointing at best. The picture is somewhat washed out when tested on both a color-corrected monitor and out-of-the-box. The film is grainy in the dark scenes and too bright in the lighter scenes. The sound is decent but nothing fantastic. The only thing that seems to be of good picture quality is the special effects, which is disappointing because it makes the CGI actually look worse.
Bonus Features:
FAR too many pointless behind-the-scenes Featurettes and excruciating commentary leave this DVD lacking.
Overall:
Not worth it. Both the movie and the quality suffer in sub-par filmmaking and bad transfer. If you are overly interested in the plot of this movie and the trailers (which I, vaguely, was), wait for it on cable and buy a blu-ray worthy title.
