Title: The Unborn Genre: Horror Starring: Odette Yustman, Gary Oldman, Meagan Good, Cam Gigandet, Idris Elba Director: David S. Goyer Studio: Universal Runtime: 89 Minutes Release Date: July 7, 2009 Format: BLU-RAY MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: D+ THROWBACK Rabbi Sendak's name is a reference to Maurice Sendak, writer of children's horror classic "Where the Wild Things Are". Ok, I get it. 'The Ring' was a decent movie. It was different. It wasn't your typical American slasher flick. Remaking an Asian horror movie worked so why not try again? But, after a slwe of failed attempts and nearly a decade in between, why keep trying? Now that slasher movies have returned (thanks, in no small part, to 'The Unborn' producer Michael Bay's 'Friday the 13th' and 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre'), I think it's time to sidestep these for a little while. QUALITY: BONUS FEATURES: The Universal menus are getting old. Always the same boring menu with almost no special features. When you first pop in the BD, you are brought to a menu asking your language. Then it goes to a menu asking if you wanted the RATED or UNRATED version. Select one and you are now brought into another waiting room, this time for about 2 minutes, assuming it is getting the movie ready to start and bypassing the special features menu as a lot of BDs do. No, after a few minutes, you are brought to the FINAL menu where you can select the movie, very frustrating. The movie itself is pretty weak. There is no character development and various plot holes that will leave you asking how or why we got where we did. Using a series of gratuitous tight underwear and tank top shots and almost-but-not-quite nudity, director David S. Goyer (co-writer of 'The Dark Knight') tries to distract you from the fact that you really don't care if the main characters succeed or die trying. |
