Title: Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay Genre: Comedy Starring: John Cho, Kal Penn, Rob Corddry, Jack Conley, Roger Bart Director: Hayden Schlossberg Studio: New Line Runtime: 1 Hour, 42 Minutes In Theatres: April 25, 2008 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: B+ Odd Couple Harold and Kumar are on their way to Amsterdam to track down Harold’s love interest when the two are arrested for terrorist activity while on the plane to the their destination. One thing leads to another and the pair find themselves on a journey filled with hijinx and mayhem. The movie starts off the same day that Harold and Kumar get home from White Castle. I didn’t think that they could possibly create a sequel to Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle, especially since the film would have a much broader geographical range. The pair find themselves at home in New Jersey to Cuba to Florida to Alabama and on and on. Surprisingly the film held up relatively well, not perfectly, but well enough. The film is much cruder then the original with full frontal nude shots of men and women as well as more promiscuous sexuality. As far as language goes, and there’s plenty of it, I don’t know which was worse, the dialogue or the soundtrack. One of the biggest problems with the film is Rob Corddry’s character Ron Fox whose sole purpose is to be wrong and spitefully evoke racial stereotyping which seemed over done and humorless. Luckily the characters surrounding him lend helpful lines to make the situation funny, but the film could have done without that character. Ed Helms, for his very minuscule role, was terrible as well. Why they use these Daily Show guys is beyond me. In the end. Like the original, we had a lot of laughs and there are some images so deeply engrained into our minds now (Bin Laden’s beard) that we can’t get them out no matter how hard we try. Your going to wind up eventually asking yourself if this movie is pretty much following the same plotline as the other film. In a sense some of the same events occur but there is just so much going on and its so funny your going to wind up not even noticing. I do not recommend this film for people who are easily offended. Its chalk full of offensive material and its not handled lightly either. Other then that I say go and see it and enjoy. |
