BOTTOM LINE

The film has its ups and downs but in the end, I think Lottery Ticket comes out on a high note.

What would you do if you won $370 million? That's the exact question Kevin (Bow Wow) is facing when he wins one of the biggest lottery jackpots ever. The only problem is the lottery offices are closed for the 4th of July holiday and he must wait three days before he can claim his winnings. With his entire community out to get their "share" of the winnings, how will Kevin survive the weekend?

Thankfully his two best friends, Benny (Brandon T. Jackson) and Stacie (Naturi Naughton) have his back and will help him escape from all the greedy hands. We all know that money can change people, and that includes Kevin himself.

My initial impression was that Lottery Ticket was eerily similar to Friday. The first 20 or so minutes, before Kevin wins the money, have the same vibes as the classic comedy. Both feature two best friends chilling in the projects, both have some crazy dude threatening the neighborhood; there are simply too many similarities for this to be a coincidence. Plus, Ice Cube is one of the executive producers so it's not to difficult to put two and two together.

Once Kevin does win the money, that's when we start getting deeper into the film. The main message is looking at how money can affect people. It's nothing new really. We all pretty much know how things are going to turn once everyone finds out that Kevin is a millionaire. If not, all you need to do is watch the trailers. At times there can be some serious moments, such as the rooftop scene, but for the most part, this message is wrapped up with jokes and outrageous behavior.

Lottery Ticket isn't as bad as I was thinking it was going to be. The humor is great at times. Brandon T. Jackson, Terry Crews, and Mike Epps put on a hilarious performance. Ice Cube even manages to get in some good scenes although his character doesn't quite fit in as well he could have been.

Another problem is that there are so many of the same stereotypes presented in the film. In general, it's just another film about black people in the hood. We've seen this so many times; it'd be nice to see something new or different for a change. I'm not saying Lottery Ticket is bad in that aspect, it's just that the genre is getting a little repetitive.

The film has its ups and downs but in the end, I think Lottery Ticket comes out on a high note. While it's not extremely high, the film is good for a few laughs and the general performance was pretty good. Check it out if you have nothing better to do or save it for a rental.
