Title: Machete Genre: Action/Adventure Starring: Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Lindsey Lohan, Steven Seagal, Danny Trejo, Cheech Marin, Jeff Fahey Director: Robert Rodriguez Studio: 20th Century Fox Runtime: 105 minutes In Theatres: September 3, 2010 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: B+ MAN OF MANY NAMES Many of Trejo's characters in Robert Rodriguez movies have been named after knives or sharp instruments: Machete in Spy Kids, Razor Eddie in the From Dusk till Dawn series, Navajas in Desperado, and Cuchillo in Predators. Machete is proof that if fans are passionate enough about a film, then it can become a reality. A fake trailer for the hack-and-slash B movie was produced for Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's 2007 Grindhouse. It was so well received, Rodriguez decided to go ahead and continue with the project and its cast including Danny Trejo, Cheech Marin, and Jeff Fahey. Joining them is an all-star cast that includes Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Lindsey Lohan, and Steven Seagal. Don't expect an Oscar worthy script though because if you're looking for plot and character development, you're in the wrong theater. This film is about action, babes, and sharp knives. At its heart, it does what it was created to do; entertain. Machete (Danny Trejo) was once a Mexican Federale until he was betrayed by everyone around him. Rather than submit to the drug lord Torrez (Steven Seagal), he goes renegade and takes matters into his own machete-wielding hands. There is no shortage of flailing limbs or decapitated heads and the splattering of blood that comes with them. Whether Trejo is using the classic blade or doing his best MacGyver impersonation with a corkscrew, he is one Mexican you do not want to cross. The film is actually pretty standard for Robert Rodriguez. If you're familiar with Desperado or even From Dusk Till Dawn you'll see many overlapping elements and specific homages to his work. His style of filming has generally remained the same and it works wonders with Machete. It's very gritty and raw and just a bloody good time! The trailers give a good overview of what's in store for you. Shotgun toting priests, machine gun mounted motorcycles, and cheesy one liners that are good for a laugh, all populate the big screen at some point. It's like something you would see at the drive-in theaters with a car full of friends and listen through your FM radio. Many people have been waiting for Machete since 2007 and I must say, it doesn't disappoint. Some aspects, such as Lindsey Lohan's nun character, seem a bit forced but you'll have a great time enjoying this B movie feature. |

Machete
I have waited forever to see Machete hit the big screen. Went in expecting to love it. Rodriguiz did such a fantastic job with Planet Terror that I was expecting this to be a fantastic Grindhouse picture. I was a little dissapointed. For one the film doesn't have enough of that Grindhouse feel that Planet Terror had. PT was an event and even though it was a big budget picture it managed to emulate a true Grindhouse picture offering up just about everything you could ask for; action, comedy, sexuallity, violence, zombies, a chick with a machine gun leg. Machete had its moments here and there but it just felt like Rodriguiz was losing sight of the way the film should have manifested and just went about shooting it like a real film without the fun. With that being said the film came off to preachy which killed the fun buzz that was there for me. The film ran a serious political agenda which killed its bullshit factor. I laughed a little but mostly sat there silently wishing that Rodriguiz would stop preaching about immigration and start settling in and jut having fun with it. It was a decent film but not at all as fun as Planet Terror.
