Frank Tupelo (Johnny Depp) is an American tourist who is about to embark on the adventure of his life after meeting the sexy and mysterious Elise (Angelina Jolie). It turns out, their meeting isn't by chance as Elise has been instructed by her criminal love, Alexander Pierce, to find someone similar to him in order to throw the police off his trail. Frank is now caught in the middle between cops, mobsters, and Elise. So much for that vacation he was planning.

We've seen Depp as a pirate, a mad hatter, and a demon barber, so seeing him become an American math teacher is quite the change of character for him. He's not exactly the confident person he's portrayed in the past, and that's a good thing. It's not the Depp we're used to seeing, at least not at first. He's actually pretty normal, especially considering everything happening around him. The only thing off about his character is the fact that he is a math teacher. As Elise says in the film, "you must be one cool math teacher." Oh, and his Spanish is muy bueno too.

Jolie is the complete opposite of Depp. It's clear that Elise is the one in charge. You don't know much about her character at first but as the film progresses, she begins to open up little by little. She's strong and confident but at the same time, she has a weakness for this Alexander Peirce guy. As chaotic as her life is, Frank is the tiny sliver of normalcy she can find.

The Tourist isn't just an suspenseful thriller. I was surprised at the amount of humor featured. Mainly it was Depp who we were laughing at but every once in a while Jolie or Paul Bettany would get in a joke or two. At times it can be distracting from the film, especially when it's supposed to be a suspenseful moment and then you have Depp go and speak Spanish to an Italian police officer.

Another aspect that bothered me was the police. The Italian police force is by far the worst, as depicted in the film. They do a horrible job when it comes to following someone. Driving 10 feet away in a big black van is not inconspicuous, no matter what anyone may think. The same can be said while steering a boat.

The Tourist has its ups and downs and that's mainly due to the predictable and somewhat out of place plot. Angelina Jolie and Johhny Depp put on a convincing performance and there are some breathtaking views of Venice, Italy, but it never really reaches its full potential.
