Show: Callan Season/Volume: 1 Genre: Action/Adventure, Drama Starring: Edward Woodward, William Squire Studio: Acorn Media Runtime: 455 minutes Release Date: July 7, 2009 Format: DVD Discs: 3 Rating: () Grade: F Callan is everything. He’s an assassin, a secret agent, an antihero, and so much more. Oh, and he’s also one of the most boring characters on TV that I have ever watched. You would think that a show about an assassin for a secret British intelligence agency would be interesting, right? Wrong. Perhaps it’s just because the show is from the seventies and that times have changed but it was difficult to keep my attention for 10 minutes, let alone an entire set of 9 episodes. The one thing that stands out the most is the absence of music. You’ll watch in utter silence as people go about doing whatever it is that they do, whether it is smoking a cigarette or changing their clothes. There’s not much action going on so no wonder why people fall asleep watching this. Perhaps during its time it was regarded as “the greatest TV show made” (according to The Australian on the back of the DVD case) but now it’s just a dull look at another crime drama. For those of you interested, there actually are a few special features such as trivia and a biography of Edward Woodward. Still, not all the bonus features in the world could save Callan for the horror it truly is.
