Show: Nabari No Ou Season/Volume: The Complete Series Part One Genre: Anime Studio: Funimation Runtime: 325 minutes Release Date: September 22, 2009 Format: DVD Discs: 2 Rating: () Grade: C Bonus Features Commentary on episode 2, Textless Opening & Closing Miharu is a teenage boy who has little to no emotion and spends his hours away from school working in his family’s restaurant. But when Miharu ends up with the power of Shinra Banshou he gains unwanted attention as clans fight over it. It is not until meeting Yoite who uses a powerful talent called “Kira” that Miharu shows any real interest. Yoite is quickly losing his senses, the cost of using Kira, and wants nothing more than to have never been born. Miharu promises to use his Shinra Banshou powers to grant Yoite’s wish. Miharu is hard to feel any attachment for. By trying something new and having a lead character so emotionless, so detached and so monotone it is hard to care about him or his life. They try to fill in for his lack of personality by adding in many additional characters that stand-out and often overreact. The concepts of the powers and the clans of ninjas that manage to secret are intriguing; but somehow it all gets dragged down into this bored, apathetic, depressing state. Yoite for me is the one thing that kind of kept me hanging in there which is odd since he too is a detached, somewhat emotionless character. I guess since he has a real reason behind his feelings he is easier to relate to. The animation can be beautiful at times and gives you characters while not completely unique manage to take on their own looks. As the clans battling will hopefully come to ahead and Miharu will gain control and use of his Shinra Banshou power this anime could take off and be entertaining. But where it stands now it feels flat and almost depressing. |
