Factoid:

The three admirals of the Marines: Kizaru, Aokiji amd Akainu are based on the animals that accompanied Momotaro (a Japanese folklore hero). The animals they resemble are a monkey, pheasant and a dog respectively.

Seldom do I come across a collection of the One Piece series that I don’t absolutely love and Collection Three is no exception. The Straw Hat gang find themselves in a series of adventures from helping a dragon return to his nest, aiding a princess, fighting giants both on land and at sea, and there’s even a monstrous whale somewhere in the whole scheme of things. It’s quite a steady ride from point A to point B in this four disc collection with only a couple of filler episodes that manage to work as stand alone episodes that will more then likely prove to come back in a significant way.

This collection starts at the end of the last collections main story arc and immediately jumps into its own, The Straw Hat gang taking on The Marines after rescuing a special little girl named Apis who was found adrift in the ocean. With an assassin in tow the gang attempts to return Apis to the island where she had been kidnapped by The Marines and find themselves needed by an ancient millennial dragon that has lost its way. Turns out The Marines and the assassin are both after something that will turn them from regular men into God’s and the key lies under the protection of the Straw Hat gang.

Next we find Luffy and the crew head for the Grand Line on a short trip that is reminiscent of their adventures heading to Skypea. Along the way they find themselves in the presence of a mountain sized whale that swallows the Going Merry and introduces them to some new characters, including a man who lives inside of the whale. Of the new characters they meet one will be significant in their further adventures, but the whale that has swallowed them is having issues that only Luffy and the crew can figure out and help appease.

In a sea side town the Straw Hat gang meets an island of friendly inhabitants that love pirates and where the beer flows like the waters of the ocean and food is plentiful. Is it to much that all they want to do is please the crew or is there something afoot that could get our gang in trouble? In any case its here where they discover a Princess in their midst and her terrible story in which they find themselves willing and able to aid her, but not before they are tagged with a death sentence by a secret organization whose leader wants them and the princess dead. Did I mention they meet a future crew mate for about five seconds?

Finally the crew find themselves unable to move on until they get their bearings on a mysterious island that holds not just ferocious dinosaurs but also giants. Are they friendly giants or are they the “I’ll crush your bones to dust” variety. In any case they end up being just some of the problems that the Straw Hat crew find before they can set sail again. All in all it’s just too much adventure for one sitting, but if you’re like me you’ll probably manage it.

Bonus features are pretty bare with a handful of trailers for other Funimation releases, Staff Commentary, and the usual Textless Songs. Not to much to get excited about unless you’re the kind of hardcore fan that will watch the collection in its entirety then go back and watch it with commentary, which may or may not be great, I don’t know. In any case it’s a pretty huge collection at a more then reasonable price. Well worth your hard earned cash. As always final judgment is yours. Enjoy.
