Show: Robotech Genre: Anime, Sci-Fi/Fantasy Starring: Jean-Claude Ballard Studio: A&E Entertainment Runtime: 2028 minutes Release Date: October 18, 2011 Format: DVD Discs: 17 Rating: ( )Grade: A+ If you were a kid in the mid to late 1980s and watched a lot of TV, then you probably saw some Robotech. This collection gathers all 85 of the episodes of the three series along with a whole bunch of extras. It is worth its weight in Harmony Gold. The story of Robotech begins with the discovery of a crashed alien space ship. In fact, Robotech itself refers to the technology derived from the findings aboard this fallen craft. But a race of giants called the Zentraedi show up to recover the ship. During this First Robotech War, or The Macross Sage, Earth defends itself from annihilation at the hands of the Zentraedi and the humans learn of "protoculture" and of the Robotech Masters. In the Second Robotech War, or The Masters, the Earth defends itself from the Robotech Masters who have come to collect the only remaining source of producing protoculture. The war ends with the defeat of the Masters, but covers the Earth in spores of the Flower of Life, the source of protoculture, and a beacon to another alien race, the Invid. The Third Robotech War, or The New Generation, shows a nearly undefended Earth conquered by the Invid. While most of the Earth Defence Force had gone off to hunt down the home of the Masters in a preemptive strike, expeditions are sent back to Earth to try to liberate them from Invid control. Just from the description of these three series, you can see how the overall arc of these stories made it differ from many other Saturday morning cartoons of the era. Telling a strong narrative over a large number of episodes rather than a weak one barely tying together mostly self contained episodes. It truly set itself apart, and for that reason it still makes for good watching today. And if the 85 episodes of the series isn't enough, this set contains four discs totalling over ten hours of extras. Deleted scenes, unaired pilots, model sheets, toy commercials, sketches and so much more. The price of this set isn't cheap, but then you are getting quite a bit of content that makes it worth every penny. |
