Gargamel is back, and this time he's sending the Smurfs on a wild adventure through Paris in this globe-trotting sequel to the 2011 hit. Determined to harness the magical essence of the Smurfs, wicked wizard Gargamel (voice of Hank Azaria) creates a diminutive race of mischief makers known as the Naughties. But in order to get the results he's looking for, Gargamel will need to get his hands on a genuine Smurf. Enter Smurfette (voice of Katy Perry), the only one of her kind who knows the spell that can transform Naughties into actual Smurfs. Having recently shot to fame in Paris due to his impressive magical powers, Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette, and sweeps her away to the City of Light. With Papa Smurf (voice of Jonathan Winters) and company hot on his trail, however, the scheming wizard quickly realizes that executing his diabolical plan will be easier said than done. Meanwhile, Smurfette's growing sense of insecurity leaves her vulnerable to the scheming of Naughties Vexy (voice of Christina Ricci) and Hackus (voice of J.B. Smoove). Director Paul Verhoeven (Showgirls, Total Recall) reunited many from his 1987 Robocop team for this $100-million science fiction adventure, adapted from Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 novel, originally serialized in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction (October-November, 1959). After graduation, Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) volunteers for the Mobile Infantry to do his Federal service -- but also to win over his girlfriend, Carmen Ibanez (Denise Richards), who has signed with the Fleet Academy to become a starship pilot. Johnny joins other boot-camp recruits -- Dizzy Flores (Dina Meyer), who has had a crush on Johnny since school, and Ace Levy (Jake Busey). Ace and Johnny become pals, and Johnny's abilities earn him the squad leader position. A training accident occurs on Johnny's watch, and he is about to resign when Earth is attacked by alien insects intent on eradicating all human life. Johnny's home, Buenos Aires, is no longer on the map. Horrified, he chooses to stay on and fight to destroy the insect threat. The Mobile Infantry travels to the planet Klendathu to battle the warrior bugs, a ruthless enemy with only one goal -- survival of their species no matter what. In the initial encounter, some 100,000 lives are lost. At a distant fort, Johnny's unit discovers that the bugs drain brains to acquire knowledge. Soon they are overwhelmed by an advancing arthropod army of immense proportions, attacking both in space and on the planet surface. The notion of human extinction becomes a possibility. For this $100-million production, some 300 artists and technicians combined models and miniatures with CGI effects to fashion a variety of creatures -- from breeder bugs to armored tanker bugs. The film employed hundreds of extras and has over 500 visual effects shots. Filming began 4/29/96 in California (LA and Long Beach, where Cal State's pyramid gym was used for the Jumpball game), New York, South Dakota, Wyoming (Casper, Hell's Half Acre), and Utah (an abandoned Wendover airstrip where the Enola Gay WWII bomber crew trained). At an abandoned airfield in Fountain Valley, California, an elaborate set was constructed to resemble a military boot camp of the future -- complete with an array of pup tents, gull-winged spaceships, hurdle obstacle course, and training facility buildings. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and you know what that means? Holiday movies. While your typical holiday movies revolve around family gatherings or magical elves, A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas takes Christmas to the extreme in glorious stoner fashion.

Six years have passed since Harold and Kumar have seen each other. In that time, Harold has gotten married and bought a house while Kumar, well, Kumar is still the same weed smoking druggie he’s always been. In an effort to please his new father-in-law, Harold must find the perfect Christmas tree by the night’s end after the old tree was accidentally set on fire at the hands of Kumar. In typical Harold & Kumar fashion, the two engage in a quest to reclaim Christmas.

If you’re a fan of these types of films, you’re going to love this third chapter in the Harold & Kumar franchise. It has all the drug use, sex references, and ridiculous situations the franchise is known for, only they’re taken to the next level. Best of all, it’s in 3D. Objects will fly out of the screen, smoke will literally be blown in your face, and crazy stoner trips will feel all the more real. At times, they go a bit overboard on the 3D effects, but you can definitely tell that the film has utilized the technology. If you’re debating whether to see it in 3D or 2D, it’s worth the extra few bucks.

Perhaps the best thing, however, is the fact that the film doesn’t take itself seriously. The cast and crew aren’t afraid to point out the fact that it’s in 3D or that Neal Patrick Harris played Carl Jenkins in Starship Troopers. Speaking of NPH, the man is a genius. You can’t not love him and everything he does in the film, from his womanizing playboy antics to mocking himself about being gay.

A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas is absolutely ridiculous and crazy but you can’t help but laugh at it. It’s more of the same stuff from previous films so you know what you’re getting into. Whether you’ve been naughty or nice, Santa delivers one mean Christmas present this year.

John Cho (“Star Trek,”) and Kal Penn (“Superman Returns,”) reprise their title roles in “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas,” which picks up six years following their last adventure.

After years of growing apart, Harold Lee (John Cho) and Kumar Patel (Kal Penn) have replaced each other with new friends and are preparing for their respective Yuletide celebrations. But when a mysterious package mistakenly arrives at Kumar’s door on Christmas Eve, his attempt to redirect it to Harold’s house ends with the “high grade” contents—and Harold’s father-in-law’s prize Christmas tree— going up in smoke. With his in-laws out of the house for the day, Harold decides to cover his tracks, rather than come clean. Reluctantly embarking on another ill-advised journey with Kumar through New York City, their search for the perfect replacement tree takes them through party heaven—and almost blows Christmas Eve sky high.

The third installment is the first to highlight the guys’ hilarious mishaps in 3D. The 2004 cult hit “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle” launched the franchise, followed by “Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay.”

It would not be a “Harold & Kumar” film without Neil Patrick Harris, who returns along with Paula Garcés (TV’s “Defying Gravity”) as Maria; Danneel Harris (“The Roommate”) as Vanessa; Eddie Kaye Thomas (the “American Pie” movies) as Rosenberg; David Krumholtz (“Mr. Popper’s Penguins”) as Goldstein; and Bobby Lee (“Pineapple Express”) as Kenneth Park.

Joining the ensemble are Tom Lennon (“I Love You Man”) as Harold’s new best friend, Todd; Danny Trejo (“Machete”) as Harold’s father-in-law; and Elias Koteas (“Shutter Island”) as Ukranian mob boss Sergei Katsov. Rounding out the cast are Amir Blumenfeld (TV’s “Pranked”) as Kumar’s new best friend Adrian; Patton Oswalt (“The Informant!”), Richard Riehle (“Halloween II”), Jordan Hinson (TV’s “Eureka”), John Hoogenakker (“Contagion”), Jake Johnson (“No Strings Attached”), Yasen Payankov (“Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon”) and David Burtka (TV’s “How I Met Your Mother”).

Todd Strauss-Schulson helms, marking his major feature film directorial debut.

Academy Award®-winner Greg Shapiro (“The Hurt Locker”) returns as producer and Mandate President Nathan Kahane, Nicole Brown, Richard Brener, Michael Disco, and Samuel J. Brown are executive producing.

The screenplay is by Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg, who wrote the previous two movies and directed the second, “Harold and Kumar Escape from Guatanamo Bay.” They are also serving as co-producers, along with Kelli Konop and Jonathan McCoy.

Collaborating with Todd Strauss-Schulson behind the scenes are director of photography Michael Barrett (“Bedtime Stories”); production designer Rusty Smith (“Meet the Fockers”), editor Eric Kissack (“Brüno”), and costume designer Mary Claire Hannan (“The Kids Are All Right”). Music is by William Ross.

The film was shot on location in Michigan.
