While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has had its fair share of strong women including Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter, and most recently Letitia Wright’s Shuri, it’s been nearly 11 years and 20 films with the men leading the charge. That all changes with this week’s release of Captain Marvel, the 21st film of the MCU and Marvel Studios’ first female-led superhero film starring Brie Larson in the titular role. It’s a monumental milestone for Marvel and while not as strong as some of the more recent Phase Three entries, it still soars to new heights for the universe at large.

The year is 1995 and as a member of the Kree’s elite military team Starforce, Vers (Brie Larson) trains under the tutelage of its leader, Yon-Rogg (Jude Law), to control her emotions and think tactically in order to be the best soldier possible. That is all put to the test when a rescue mission is turned into an ambush and Vers is taken hostage by the Skrulls, an alien race of shapeshifters. While she is able to break free thanks to her Kree powers, she crashlands a ship on Earth, which jars memories of a Carol Danvers that have been buried deep within her subconscious. Teaming up with S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and rookie Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), Vers discovers a connection between Earth and her past and does all that she can to regroup with Starforce to prevent a Skrull invasion and all out war.

Captain Marvel is a flashback to a time long before Iron Man or the Avengers where Earth’s only experience with superheroes of any kind was Captain America. The film does get off to a somewhat rocky start as it jumps straight into the Kee-Skull war that has been taking place on the planet Hala. It immediately throws a lot of information and characters at you. Vers/Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel has a pretty complex history and her introduction is pretty intense, even for those familiar with her from the comics. It takes a few beats to understand the various relationships between the characters and races.

Thankfully, the story picks up once Carol crashlands on Earth and teams up with Fury. The chemistry and banter between Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson is simply fantastic, bringing a buddy cop feel to the film. Larson is clearly the one in charge of the situation, despite her fish out of water scenario on Earth, and Jackson is just along for the ride doing what he can. It’s wonderful to see a younger, two-eyed Fury and the return of Coulson to the big screen. It can go a little overboard with the 90s references, but Captain Marvel feels very much like a tribute to MCU’s Phase One as well as something fresh that can get you excited about what’s to come in the future.

Perhaps what Captain Marvel does best, however, is with its message of hope and perseverance in the face of adversity. It’s without a doubt an empowering and inspirational film that young women can look up to. Some of the best scenes are between Larson and Lashana Lynch, who plays Danver’s best friend and fellow pilot Maria Rambeau. There are some heartwarming and emotional scenes between the two of them as well as Maria’s daughter Monica, played by Akira Akbar. Captain Marvel works best with these small and intimate scenes between characters.

I’m also a fan of how Marvel Studios subverts expectations. I won’t give away any spoilers for the film, but there are a few surprises in store, ones that I’m sure are going to divide the fandom much in the same way Iron Man 3 did. I like that Marvel isn’t afraid to take chances and doesn’t always stick to the comics as the end all, be all. They sometimes switch things up, and with Captain Marvel I think it will work out for the better in the end. Marvel is always thinking about the long game and rarely have they disappointed.

Captain Marvel isn’t a perfect film, though. The action is pretty standard and some might even say disappointing given that Captain Marvel is supposed to be the strongest hero in the MCU. It’s not bad. It just doesn’t make quite the impact as say Black Panther or Thor: Ragnarok. Captain Marvel is a solid, mid-tier addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s a wonderful introduction to the titular character and a welcoming return for others like Fury and Coulson. In the end, Brie Larson is more than capable of carrying the film and possibly the entire MCU on her cosmic shoulders.

'Captain Marvel' Begins Production; Sees Return of Familiar Cast

Captain Marvel has officially begun principle photography in Los Angeles, California, Marvel Studios has announced. Filming will also shoot on location in Fresno, CA as well as locations in Baton Rouge and New Orleans Louisiana.

Furthermore, Marvel Studios has announced the cast list for the film and there are some familiar names. As the film is set in the 1990s, it no surprise we're seeing the return of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, presumably before he lost his eye, as well as his right-hand man, Clark Gregg's Agent Coulsen. Most interesting to note is that the film also starts bother Lee Pace and Djimon Hounsou, both who appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy as Ronan the Accuser and Korath.

Fans of the comics know that Ronan is of Kree descent, and Air Force pilot Carol Danvers, played by Brie Larson, inherits her powers from the Kree alien Captain Mar-vell, played by Jude Law, to become Captain Marvel. I wouldn't be surprised if we see some backstory of Ronan before he becomes the power-hungry radical bent on destroying the planet of Xandar.

The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Captain Marvel also stars Ben Mendelsohn, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, and McKenna Grace, and is directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. It will be released on March 8, 2019.

The Georgia film industry is a big as its ever been thanks to substantial tax benefits over the past decade. Just last year the state saw an economic impact of more than $7 billion thanks in part to the industry. One of the biggest contributors is Marvel Studios, and here's why.

It all began with Ant-Man, which was the first film production of the newly created Pinewood Atlanta Studios in 2014. Then came Captain America: Civil War. Currently we're on the verge of the release of both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Black Panther recently wrapped filming, Avengers: Infinity War is currently filming, and Ant-Man and the Wasp is about to begin pre-production. Further down the road we have Captain Marvel and the fourth Avengers film. All of these films are primarily being shot in and around Atlanta. Without a doubt, Marvel is here to stay.

But why?

Other states have offered equally appealing tax credits in the past but have been nowhere near as successful as Georgia, who currently ranks #3 in worldwide film production. Bert Brantley, the COO of the Georgia Economic Development Agency, attended the Atlanta premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 this past Sunday and spoke with us about why Georgia's film industry is booming.

"It’s been our long term commitment," he says. "Our governor has told the industry that this incentive is here to stay. You can put down the infrastructure, we’re seeing studios being built here because they know it’s going to be here. They can count on that for movies, not just this year, but in five years, in 10 years, in 15 years. It’s not just a one-shot kinda deal; it’s a sustainable industry."

Georgia's commitment to the long term can be seen through the influx in local crew members working on these films. The Fox Theatre in downtown Atlanta was packed to capacity with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 crew members eager to see the results of their labor on the big screen. Most of them had worked on previous Marvel films as well and will no doubt work on future Marvel films, too.

"One thing we’re proud of is helping create the burgeoning and growing crew base that’s here," says David Grant, Marvel's VP of Physical Production. "There was a point where we used to have a very small portion of the crew that were local hires. That is now changing. Every movie we do we hire more locals so that number is shifting. We’re very proud of that."

A lot of that is thanks in part to the Georgia Film Academy, which works with the Georgia Board of Regents, the university system, and technical schools to give students hands-on experience working on film sets and provide the tools and training necessary to work in the industry. "Back when shows first started shooting here they would import crews in from California and New York," explains Brantley. "Now we’re building that crew base. We’re teaching them literally on the set, like you would with any internship. They’re on the set, using that equipment, and we’re building that experienced and trained workforce and crew base that shows are going to rely on for the next 10 or 20 years."

They may say that all good things must come to an end, but Georgia's film industry is looking as strong as ever. One thing is for sure, Marvel Studios isn't going anywhere.

"There will be situations where due to specific location requirements and other city requirements where we might have to go away for a little bit, but we will continue to come, says Grant. "There might be a little gap sometimes here and there, but our plans are to constantly come here henceforward. We plan on being here into the unforeseeable future."

Brie Larson to Star as Carol Danvers in Marvel's 'Captain Marvel'

Marvel has selected Brie Larson to star as Carol Danvers, the titular character for the upcoming Marvel Studios film, Captain Marvel, the studio announced during San Diego Comic-Con 2016.

The announcement was made during Marvel's Hall H panel right as the massive cast of superheroes were about to take a group photo together. You can watch the moment below.

Larson then took to Instagram to share the news saying, "Call me Captain Marvel," as she posed in her new Marvel Studios cap.

Captain Marvel will be released on March 8, 2019.

'Ant-Man' Gets a Sequel and Other Marvel Studios Phase 3 Updates

Mavel Studios has announced its plans for Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the news that Ant-Man will be receiving a sequel, and that it will be coming sooner than you think.

The sequel will be called Ant-Man and the Wasp and will be released on July 6, 2018. As the title suggests, Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) will be returning alongside Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), who dramatically unveiled the Wasp suit in a post-credits scene.

In addition, Ant-Man and the Wasp's addition into the MCU schedule will shift Black Panther to February 16, 2018 and Captain Marvel to March 8, 2019.

Marvel has also announced the release dates for three untitled Marvel Studios films. They are May 1, 2020, July 10, 2020, and November 6, 2020.
