Though it looked for a while as though Reese Witherspoon might be headed for raunchy comedy territory in Sex Tape alongside Jason Segel, she’s dropped out. Now Segel and Jake Kasdan – who took over directorial duties last year – have a new potential co-star in mind, as Cameron Diaz is in talks.

If she signs, the move would see the trio reunite after Diaz and Segel acted in Kasdan’s last comedy, Bad Teacher.

This time around, they’d play an established couple, who have been married with kids for a while and decide the time is right to spice up their love life. With the ankle biters packed off elsewhere, they make a sexy tape, only for the recording to go missing so that they have to head out on a quest to get it back.

Diaz has been linked with the film for a while, but formal negotiations are only now winding up. She’ll next be seen in Ridley Scott’s The Counselor (we saw some clips from that in Fox’s big CinemaCon presentation) and is set to work on The Other Woman with Kate Upton and Leslie Mann. Segel, meanwhile, will crop up briefly in This Is The End alongside Seth Rogen and almost everyone they've ever worked with. The apocalyptic comedy is due here on June 28.

Judd Apatow has an aptitude for being able to make people laugh. While there’s nothing overly sophisticated about his humor, it’s nonetheless entertaining and quotable. Just try to find me a 20-something-year-old guy who doesn’t know the lines from The 40-Year-Old Virgin or Knocked Up. I dare you. Even when not directing, just having Apatow’s name attached to a project is almost a guarantee that what you’re about to watch will be funny. Unfortunately, only being funny doesn’t always cut it.

Knocked Up first introduced us to the dysfunctional couple Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) and while by the end of the film they have reconciled, things haven’t changed all that much years down the road. As the title suggests, This is 40 follows Pete and Debbie as they both turn 40 and face the fact that they’re getting older and their marriage isn’t as great as they once thought. Furthermore, financial problems with Pete’s record label and thousands of missing dollars from Debbie’s clothing store only put more tension on their strained relationship. Suddenly Ben and Alison don’t seem like such a bad match after all.

This is 40 attempts to delve beyond the comical jokes and gags that Apatow is known for and explore the characters as they transition to a new period in their lives. Unfortunately, it’s not that interesting. Everyone in the film is dealing with a crisis of some sort. Pete’s business is failing, Debbie’s worried about getting old, and both struggling with horrible parents. It’s always one thing after another that apparently goes wrong followed by a brief period of momentary happiness. The film is filled with these up and down moments that don’t really go anywhere and are never fully resolved. This is 40 goes through a midlife crisis in deciding whether it wants to be a comedy or a drama and suffers overall as a result.

There are some redeeming qualities, though. The casting is great, with Rudd and Mann being joined by Jason Segel, Melissa McCarthy, Albert Brooks, Chris O’Dowd, and Megan Fox. Most of the memorable involve the supporting cast including a hilarious scene with Melissa McCarthy at a school or Jason Segel and Chris O’Dowd fawning over Megan Fox. It’s these scenes where Apatow’s style of humor shines. If only there were more of them during the course of the film’s dauntingly long running time of two hours and 15 minutes.

This is 40 shows that “the sort-of sequel to Knocked Up” isn’t a guaranteed success. It has its moments, yes, but overall the film is a tiresome chore that relies on fleeting scenes of pure comedy genius to propel it forward. I guess wisdom doesn’t always come with age in some cases.

Getting married is one of the biggest commitments two people can make, and typically the first big step to the altar is the proposal. Once the initial excitement wears off, it’s time to delve into the madness that is planning a wedding. Depending on the couple, engagements can last anywhere from a few hours to a few years. For recent lovers Tom (Jason Segel) and Violet (Emily Blunt), their engagement is going on five years. For them, something always seems to be getting in the way of planning their wedding. Then again, is there ever a perfect moment to do so?

The Five-Year Engagement is a romantic comedy about a couple who can’t seem to take the leap and pick a date to get married. It’s not that they don’t want to. Their lives just don’t seem to perfectly match up for a wedding. As the days drift on, more and more things seem to impede their relationship. Violet becomes caught up in her job doing psychological studies at college, and Tom gives up his wonderful chef job in San Francisco to move across the country with her. Meanwhile, all their loved ones are either getting married themselves and having kids or kicking the bucket in the case of their grandparents.

Jason Segel and Emily Blunt completely make the film. Their chemistry on screen is simply fantastic and feels real. You get to experience all the up and downs of their rollercoaster of a relationship, often with hilarious results. Segel’s character is impacted the most, as we see him go from a top five-star chef to a bearded huntsman. At times it’s downright sad, but you can’t help but laugh.

The film does drag on a bit towards the end, but there are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments to keep you occupied. Director Nicholas Stoller, who has worked previously with Segel on The Muppets and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, delivers one of the best romantic comedies of the year. It’s witty and has just the right amount of raunchy humor. A lot of it also comes from the superb supporting cast, whether it’s Chris Pratt singing Spanish love songs to his bride or Rhys Ifans doing parkour in a back alley that would make Michael Scott jealous.

Most romantic comedies dial up the cheese factor and are light on the laughs but The Five-Year Engagement manages to deliver in every aspect. Don’t wait too long to see this movie because it may be gone before you know it.
