SHAKEFIRE: First things first… There’s a rumor going around that you didn’t want a Hannah Montana movie. Is that true?
MILEY CYRUS: It is true! At first, I was a little concerned because I wanted to know how the show would work in a movie format. We wanted to make a movie that was more realistic than the show, along with some comedy and romance. I think we did a good job of doing that, but it was a little scary at the start.

SF: Why was it scary?
MC: Well, this is my first feature film where I’m the lead. I know there’s a first time for everything, but I want my first time in everything to be close to perfect! It’s not like any other movie because there’s a whole back-story in the television show that everyone knows about and we had to be true to that.

SF: Did you have fun filming the movie?
MC: I was scared out of my mind for half of the movie! Making a film is like learning the ropes all over again. Our television show can be a little unrealistic because it’s supposed to be crazy and fun – just like a normal kid sitcom. But a movie is different. It has to be more realistic.

SF: What happens in the movie’s story?
MC: Well, it’s about how Hannah and Miley have melted together. Hannah was just this alter ego, but Miley was the normal girl underneath the wig. It’s become a bit of a mess because the alter ego is ruining Miley’s life – so she is sent back to Tennessee to learn about where she came from and who she really is.

SF: Does she change during the film?
MC: Miley is growing up in the movie. She’s going through hard times and she’s trying to find herself – and I think that’s a beautiful part of the movie. It’s cool to see her change.

SF: Is the movie a farewell to Hannah Montana?
MC: No way! We’re not saying goodbye to Hannah just yet. We’re already working on a third season of the TV show and we’re in talks for a fourth season. I really hope we do Season Four!

SF: Did you bring any ideas to the movie?
MC: I’m really interested in films, so I was eager to help out. I talked about how a normal Tennessee girl should look and act. I didn’t want to see an exaggerated version of a cowgirl in a cowboy hat and boots. I had ideas on keeping it real – and that’s what we did in the movie.

SF: Would you like to see the romance in the movie cross over to the TV show?
MC: We’ve tried to keep the movie pretty separate from the television show. I don’t think we’ll bring any of the new characters from the movie into the show really. I think it would be better to keep them apart.

SF: Why?
MC: For starters, Hannah’s love interest in the movie is called Travis and he is a very mellow guy – but that wouldn’t work so well on a sit-com that’s filmed in front of a live studio audience. Hannah’s love interests need to be louder and more outgoing. And anyway, I think it’s good to keep it separate because it’ll feel like a never-ending movie otherwise!

SF: Lucas Till – the guy who plays Travis in the movie – says you’re a very good kisser…
MC: He said that? What a freak! I’m going to text him and tell him he’s weird.

SF: Was he a good kisser?
MC: He was OK. I think Lucas is adorable and all of the girls love him on screen. He’s a great guy, but the kiss was just a screen kiss.

SF: Was the kissing scene embarrassing to film?
MC: No, it’s not embarrassing. Kissing is something that everybody does! Hannah Montana is a funny comedy, but the kiss matures the movie a little bit. It’s something that people aren’t expecting, which is good.

SF: What’s the message behind the movie?
MC: The story shows how you need to be able to take the time to realize who you are and where you’ve come from. I know I have to do that in my life sometimes. It felt great to return home to Nashville to shoot the movie and be comfortable with who I am. Where you’re from reflects a lot of who you are and who you’ll become as you get older.

SF: Did you learn anything while making the movie?
MC: I did! I learned that it’s super important to stay true to yourself and your family. I’ve also learned that I’ve got a lot to learn about life, but that’s just part of growing up.

SF: Are you proud of the songs in the new film, Miley?
MC: Of course I am! All of the new songs really suit the movie. In fact, I think they’re some of the best songs I’ve ever recorded. The music really lifts the film and I love them to bits.

SF: What’s your favorite song from the film?
MC: I really like The Climb because it’s about becoming a better person. That’s what Miley Stewart and Hannah Montana are both working towards in the movie, so it has a special place in my heart.

SF: Tell us more…
MC: Well, it’s about enjoying every moment in your life. I don’t know what’s waiting for me around the corner and I don’t know what else I’m going to be doing in the future – but you’ve got to enjoy things while you’re doing them. There are tough times and mountains to climb, but you’ve got to go for it.

SF: Do you think there’s always going to be another mountain to climb?
MC: Yes. I think there are always going to be things that you’re going to want to do. In the song, it doesn’t only mean a new dream or a new goal, but it means you’re going to stumble and you’re going to fall a little bit along the way. It’s about picking yourself back up and starting again.

SF: These words sound very wise, Miley…
MC: They are, aren’t they? Well, I’m sure there will be another mountain. It’s happened to me before and it will happen to me again. It’s just a part of learning. It’s part of life – and I look forward to tackling more of it in the future.

Rick Ross hits No. 1 with 'Deeper Than Rap'

The Miami rapper makes it three-for-three No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200, including two in 13 months, as "Deeper Than Rap" moved 150,000 units during its first week. That's 40,000 fewer than "Trilla" sold during its freshman week in March 2008 but easily enough to push the soundtrack to "Hannah Montana: The Movie" from the summit.

Depeche Mode scores its sixth top 10 album and best debut since 1993 with "Sounds of the Universe." But the 80,000-unit tally marks the English electronic band's smallest debut sales week for a studio set since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991. The group's previous four studio offerings -- dating to its lone No. 1, 1993's "Songs of Faith and Devotion" -- had opening weeks north of 92,000.

Pennsylvania rapper Asher Roth -- whose paean to partying, "I Love College," flirted with the pop top 10 last month -- arrives at No. 5 with his debut disc, "Asleep in the Bread Aisle."

Elsewhere, the double-platinum soundtrack to "Twilight" remains for a sixth consecutive week in the top 10, where it has resided since the film's DVD release.

Miley lines Disney's wallets while Rogen can't defend himself and Dragonball just sucks

Miley Cyrus stretched her pop fame a little longer this weekend while Seth Rogen kept status quo and Dragonball Evolution couldn't even live up to the disappointing expectations everyone pegged on it.

HANNAH MONTANA: THE MOVIE ($34,000,000)
Dwinling audience? Not exactly. Despite what some have claimed, Miley Cyrus' fame is not fading, at least not any time soon. After the tremendous failure of Disney colleagues the Jonas Brothers' theatrical attempt, Miley redeemed the Disney Channel name with an opening $3 million higher than her surprisingly enormous opening of the concert movie Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour. The numbers seem a bit skewed at first, however, as her latest outing opened on over 400% more theaters. The movie, as expected, was very front-loaded, taking in over half of it's weekend take on Friday and numbers should continue to fall sharply as the weeks go on, possibly tallying around the same as her concert movie ($65 million). No records broken here but a very solid opening indeed.

OBSERVE AND REPORT ($11,140,000)
Anna Faris took a dip from the August opnening of her headling The House Bunny ($14 million) but was her second highest opening without the words "Scary Movie" in the title. As for Seth Rogen, he upped his tally from October's Zack and Miri Make a Porno ($10 million) which was a sharp dip from August's Pineapple Express ($23 million) as well as 2007's Superbad ($33 million) and Knocked Up ($30 million). Not to mention the recent hit Monsters Vs Aliens ($59 million), but that is just a voiceover, does that really count?

DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION ($4,650,000)
Ahh, Dragonball. The movie that no one thought should or could be made into a movie ended up being the movie that...well, shouldn't have been made into a movie. The most popular manga and anime of all time clunked it's way clumsily into the box office fray this weekend, getting knocked out faster than you can say kamehameha (if you can say it, that is). This failure was seen from a mile away as Director James Wong (The One) alienated fans by altering the storyline so much that it was only recognizeable by name (and, even that can be argued as the story can be more closely assimilated with Dragonball Z and not Dragonball, in which Goku is seen as grade school age). This was perhaps Wong's highest profile movie of his career but the first to fail to generate a double digit opening weekend behind Final Destination ($10 million), The One ($19 million) and Final Destination 3 ($19 million). To make matters worse, the movie failed to even make as much as the recent flop Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. And, to make matters even WORSE than that, if numbers hold, it will have generated less than $1 million on Sunday. For a high profile action movie based on a built-in audience source, this one was just a failure all around. Seems like the spirit bomb backfired this time. A surprisingly entertaining coming of age tween romance that offers up a good dose of music stretching from the pop rock of Hannah Montana to some really good country from Taylor Swift (who also appears in the film), Billy Ray Cyrus, and more all wrapped up in a family friendly message that is agreeable and heartfelt.

Last night the show filled two theaters here in Charlotte and I was surprised to find not only small children but teenagers coming in on their own to see the film. From what my eldest daughter tells me the film has a draw due to the appearance of Taylor Swift and a musician from the band Son of Dork (formerly of U.K. boy band Busted). Regardless it was a seemingly magical screening as the kids clapped and sang along in somewhat perfect unison to songs they knew and strangely enough two teenagers who stood as if to leave but stopped on the side aisle and began to dance in synch with a scene from the film before returning to their seats. Shamefully I have to admit that the romance in the film between Cyrus and her co-star Lucas Till plus the side romance plot between her Father Billy Ray Cyrus and Melora Hardin were very winning.

Kudos to director Peter Chelsom, director of one of my favorites “The Mighty” (based on Rodman Philbrick’s novel Freak the Mighty), for being able to balance the film well enough so that, as a parent, I did not feel consumed by a dumbed down version of a film I could have sworn would be exactly like the television series only cuter and sillier. Great job there, but, that’s not to say that the film doesn’t have some snags. Mind you these are things that can be overlooked since this is a kids film. The biggest snag is the end of the film which felt very weak settling up loose ends with little effort put into it. For such a monumental event the film closes out with everyones best interest in mind without consequence (you’ll understand when it happens). Also, some aspects of the film could have worked during a running play but not in a film, for example; during a musical number in the film synchronized dancers are on hand magically and the back up band instantly knows the number they are to perform even though it’s a song they’d never practiced before. I know, I know, suspension of disbelief, and as I said it works here because of the film genre. Still, the film was surprisingly good and the kids loved it. Definitely make plans to take your kids to this one and you too might find yourself enjoying it.
