Kelly Reichardt s suspense-thriller NIGHT MOVES is the story of three radical environmentalists coming together to execute the most intense protest of their lives: the explosion of a hydroelectric dam. Harmon (Peter Sarsgaard, The Killing) is a former Marine, radicalized by tours of duty overseas. His life in the military is behind him, but at heart he remains excited by the prospect of mayhem and destruction. Dena (Dakota Fanning, The Twilight Saga) is a high-society dropout who s moved west and cut ties with her family, edging ever deeper into radical politics. And Josh (Jesse Eisenberg, Social Network), their leader, is a self-made militant, devoted to the protection of the earth by any means necessary. As the three plan, carry out and then witness the fallout of their attention-grabbing act of sabotage, they find their own personal limits tested on a journey of doubt, paranoia and unintended consequences.

He joins fellow new castmember Elias Koteas in the rebooted AMC drama.

AMC's revived The Killing has found its villain.

Peter Sarsgaard has been tapped to play a death row inmate in the rebooted third season of the drama, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The Lovelace actor will play Tom Seward, a condemned inmate for whom the clock is clicking down. He's described as a lifelong convict born into poverty and crime who has been in and out of the system for violent crimes since he was 10. Never wanting to appear weak, every interaction for Tom is a challenge and one he must dominate.

The casting marks Sarsgaard's first recurring role in a TV series. He joins new castmembers Elias Koteas (as the new partner to Mireille Enos), Amy Seimetz as a mother whose daughter is missing and Max Fowler as a streetwise hustler. Enos and Joel Kinnaman will reprise their role in the drama, which AMC revived in January.

Sarsgaard has played a number of dark characters. In addition to starring as an abusive porn producer in Lovelace, which premiered Saturday at the Berlin International Film Festival, he played a man who seduces an underage girl in An Education. His other credits include Very Good Girls, Green Lantern, Flightplan and Shattered Glass, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination. He's repped by CAA, Authentic and Peikoff Law.

The 12-episode third season of The Killing will introduce a new case and be set a year after the Rosie Larsen investigation featured in the first two seasons was closed with Linden no longer a detective. She is drawn back when Holder's search for a runaway girl leads him to a string of murders that connects to a previous investigation she led.

Coming on the scene fairly recently, Illinois-born actor Peter Sarsgaard has already demonstrated an amazing flair for harsh, disturbing, dark-edged characters despite his boyish countenance. A graduate of St. Louis' Washington University where he majored in history and literature, he was a co-founder of the comedy improvisational group Mama's Pot Roast and trained initially with the Actors' Studio in New York. Such off-Broadway productions included Horton Foote's "Laura Dennis" and John Cameron Mitchell's "Kingdom of Earth."

He made his screen debut in Tim Robbins' Dead Man Walking (1995) and was given more sizable roles in Desert Blue (1998) and The Man in the Iron Mask (1998/I), as the ill-fated son of the Musketeer Athos, played by John Malkovich. Peter then started gracing the art-house circuit, making a violent, searing impression as a homophobic killer in Boys Don't Cry (1999) starring two-time Oscar-winner Hilary Swank as a trans-gendered teen.

Other impressionable offbeat roles for Peter that have thrilled critics from coast to coast include Shattered Glass (2003), which earned him a slew of awards including the prestigious National Society of Film Critics Award. Prior to that, he showed off his versatility with portrayals ranging from a Russian nuclear reactor officer in K-19: The Widowmaker (2002) to a drug addict in The Salton Sea (2002).
