Keeping Up with Panem’s Happy Couple

Can true love conquer all? We hope so.

With the Quarter Quell fast approaching, we’re thrilled to report that there have been more and more sightings of our beloved Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark throughout the Capitol. Just yesterday, the darling victors from District 12 were spotted walking hand in hand, wearing their custom training gear by Lucas Hugh. One source exclusively tells Capitol Couture that the couple “were smiling and whispering. Peeta seemed to be in a really good mood.”

No doubt, the pressure of the upcoming Hunger Games has put a strain on all of the victors. But for a couple, the grueling physical and emotional preparations must be particularly stressful. To date, no other Hunger Games have ever included romantically involved competitors like Katniss and Peeta. As one renowned relationship expert in the Capitol notes, “Just working together can be very tough on a relationship, so it’s hard to imagine how these two can train for the Quarter Quell and not fray.”

Of course, the many galas and celebration dinners should provide some distraction from the intense conditioning for the Games. Not to mention, a moment for the two to steal a kiss under the stars. We suspect that District 12 escort Effie Trinket and mentor Haymitch Abernathy will strongly encourage the couple to enjoy the lavish parties. And renegade stylist Cinna will surely surprise us with a bevy of couture confections for gorgeous, lithe Katniss. Rumor has it that something with “feathers” may be unveiled at President Snow’s ball. Will it be emu, ostrich, mockingjay or peacock plumes? Capitol Couture, which has exclusive access to President Snow’s gala and the after-party circuit, will be the first to report on all of the fashion and behind the scenes happenings. Our handsome victor always looks like a leading man on a mission. Perhaps it is the unflinching courage in his eyes or his rough-hewn features. Peeta has the mournful gaze of a puppy dog and the stubborn jaw of a prizefighter.

In this portrait, our hair stylist awards points for the victor’s thick brows and unified, left leaning hair—it lends the sense of a super hero. The straight line of his lips suggests that he may be clenching his teeth, just as he clenches his fists. The effect is quiet menace.

Of course, we all know that Peeta has a lofty aim in protecting his one and only Katniss. His defensive stance suggests that no victor will get between him and his fiancé. Love can bring on a potent adrenaline rush, which could be the greatest weapon of all. (PanemProganda)

Mockingjay casting has begun! Lionsgate just announced hat Natalie Dormer will join the cast of Mockingjay as Cressida for both parts. You may recognize Dormer as Margaery Tyrell on HBO’s Game Of Thrones (X) She also starred as Anne Boleyn in The Tudors and had a prominent role on the far too short lived, The Fades.

Cressida is a resident director from the Capitol who joined the rebellion along with her camera crew Castor and Pollux as well as her assistant Messalla, who had also joined the rebellion, to District 13 when they fled the Capitol. Cressida was told by Plutarch to follow Katniss throughout her journeys in the rebellion so they could make numerous propos across Panem to encourage strength and morale in the rebels. Cressida is described as a young woman whose head is shaved bald and tattooed with vivid green vines. (hungergameswiki)

Actor Evan Ross has been officially cast in the role of Messalla in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Parts 1 & 2!

Messalla was part of a TV crew that films propos for the war as part of the Airtime Assault. He was the assistant to the director, Cressida. He was originally from the Capitol but had joined the rebels in the war. (x)

Annie’s character is a fan favorite and the casting was a very hot topic! Not much is known about Stef Dawson’s career, but she definitely looks like Annie! Can’t wait to see how she’ll do.

Covergirl Capitol Collection - District 12

To capture the dark, foreboding work of this district, COVERGIRL Capitol Makeup Artist Dotti created an eye palette of shades reminiscent of the iridescent natural resource. “I was inspired by the interpretation of coal mining, by the colors in coal mining: the dust, the grey, the silvers and the black,” she says of the collusion of strong colors that enhance our District 12 model’s blue-grey eyes.

Of the bright, bold sweep of canary yellow in the inner corner of the eye, Dotti adds: “It signifies the power in coal.” The model’s monochromatic black attire and long, thick braid is a nod to District 12’s very own heroine, Katniss Everdeen. (thehob)

The Hunger Games Official Facebook page released the cover art of Coldplay’s new track ATLAS from the Catching Fire Soundtrack! ATLAS worldwide debut will on September 6th. The music release always makes it feel a bit more real! (X)

Zoetic Sol, the newest issue of Capitol Couture features Jena Malone as everyone’s favorite punk rock tribute, Johanna Mason.

Johanna Mason may hail from the lumber district, but this slip of a victor is anything but green. Don’t be swayed by her cinnamon sprinkle of freckles and delicate, doll-like features. She was one of the youngest tributes ever reaped in Hunger Games history and her agility with an axe resonates throughout Panem. Sly. Savage. Sangfroid. These are just a few of the adjectives tossed around to describe Mason, who’s known for disarming her victims by feigning weakness.

Mason arrives at her photo shoot for Capitol Couture looking anything but meek. She has a reputation for being snide with her prep team. District 7’s stylist has been dressing tributes like oak trees and firs for the opening ceremonies ever since the first Hunger Games. Clearly, Mason prefers a more conceptual take on lumber and paper. “My stylist’s the biggest idiot in the Capitol. Wish I’d gotten Cinna,” she has been known to mumble.

Caesar Flickerman is also highlighted in this newest issue with his own profile.

“I like to complement my surroundings, so I always feel stylish,” he says. “Don’t you love that?” The hue of his bouffant hair changes annually for every Hunger Games. (He still proudly defends the crimson coif he sported for the 73rd Games, even though district darling Katniss told him that it looked like he was bleeding.) “My stylist touches up the color daily and the process is very drying. I have this wonderful deep conditioner that is custom-blended for me,” he says. With a wink, he adds: “I’m very high maintenance.”

Though he is decidedly subjective about fashion, Flickerman often comes across as abjectly neutral on the subject of the tributes. This particular Quarter Quell Hunger Games presents a challenge to even the most determinedly neutral of spectators though. “I think this is going to be the most exciting Hunger Games Panem has ever seen,” he says, gesticulating passionately. “It’s a much more level playing field, which really raises the stakes. I am so moved and inspired by the courageousness of each of the tributes.”

Jenna Malone was also interviewed by Vouge where she discusses getting looking like Joanna and get her body reading for the area.

Your role in The Hunger Games sounds physically tough. How did you get ready for the part?

“Luckily, I did [an action] film called Sucker Punch a few years ago, which taught me what I could achieve in a gym. I lifted 235 pounds in preparation for that movie and my whole body transformed. The same stunt team—they’re called 87Eleven—got me in shape for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. We focused on martial arts–type training for the role of Johanna, which helped with stamina and endurance. I also did strength training with Patrick Murphy, who is kind of like a body sculptor. I trained five days a week for two months before we started filming, and then I kept it up during the months of shooting.”

Johanna is rumored to make a striking above-the-neck transformation in the movie, too. Tell us about it.“If you Google the name Johanna Mason, there are 7,000-plus fan drawings of what she looks like, what people want her to look like, what her parents look like! It was crazy bringing this iconic character to life. I think we were all a little intimidated. For her first look in the Capitol, she is wearing this long black ponytail with red tips that goes down to her waist, and eyelashes that go on forever. Her look is really about her eyes. So it was about finding the wildest fake lashes from Germany or Japan. We only had a few sets of them, and I had to be really careful taking them on and off. It took about two-and-a-half hours to get makeup-ready each day. Later, in the Arena, she’s stripped down, sweaty, and sexy, which took about forty minutes. We spent almost three weeks trying to figure out Johanna’s hair [for those scenes]. We cut it, we put things in it, we cut it again, and we tried a wig. One day, I just got in there with some scissors and I cut it my own hair. I said, ‘Ok, this is what she would have done.’ It was a bit terrifying.” (X)

Blipper, a free image recognition application, is giving fans of The Hunger Games a sneak peek at exclusive content from the upcoming Catching Fire-inspired makeup line by COVERGIRL created by makeup artist Dotti. These brand new images feature ostentatious Panem crafted looks made to represent each of the 12 districts in the film. The line will involve Panem-inspired nail polish, nail decals, mascara, lip gloss, and more–all of which JLaw and cast used during filming. (hunger-games.net)

While talking to Moviefone about his new film The Butler, Lenny Kravitz and also discussed his Hunger Games fame, creating new music, Catching Fire, & Francis Lawrence.

I was at the ”Catching Fire” panel at Comic-Con this year, where you brought up something really interesting: that younger kids are now recognizing you as Lenny Kravitz the actor and not Lenny Kravitz the musician.

Yeah, it first started on a street in Paris. This little kid came up to me and said “Oh, Lenny. Oh, my god! I love your work.” I am thinking, You’re seven. I was like, “Oh, really, you have the records?” And he said, “No, ‘Hunger Games.’” I have been getting more of that. A guy came up to my table recently and said, “My daughter would really like a picture with you.” Over walks a nine-year-old who has no idea.

That has to be a bit strange, because for years you’ve been recognized as a musician.

Well, what’s cool is they’re now getting turned on to the music.

… So are you finding time to record music, too?

I just finished an album while I was doing “Catching Fire” — I had no plan to do this; I was in Atlanta and I like to work in my own studio — I went in the studio and ended up recording an album at night. So I would be filming “Catching Fire” all day, go to the studio, work all night, either get no sleep or get an hour or two, and then go right back to work. I did that for, like, three weeks.

How do you think that affected your creative output for each — doing two things at once and not getting sleep?

It worked! It really did. I should’ve been so tired. I mean, I was tired but I was so charged creatively that it just worked.

Did you have more confidence going into “Catching Fire,” since this was your second “Hunger Games”?

Well, it was really fun. It was like going back to summer camp a second year and seeing all your friends again. The cast, we really have a great chemistry together — we really dig each other. We have a new director, Francis Lawrence, so there’s an unknown there. But from the first day, it was great. He took charge and was wonderful to work with. We had a lot of fun, as we did on the first one. I am looking forward to seeing it myself.

With less than 100 days to go until the premiere of Catching Fire, Lionsgate has decided to treat the fans to countdown full of photos, stills, news, & Panem fashion. (x)

Kicking of the countdown we have CoverGirl looks inspired by The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The model’s looks are inspired by Luxury (District 1) and Fishing (District 4).

Continuing with the fashion spots, Capitol Couture has released two new Capitol high fashion ads for Catching Fire - one featuring glamorous futuristic eye-wear and another showcasing a perfume by Cinna.

“This afternoon, uber-stylist Cinna debuts his eponymous fragrance with stunning billboards throughout the city and misters releasing wafts of CINNA. It’s a follow up to last year’s launch of his signature Liquid Skyliner, which sold out citywide in two hours.

“The scent speaks for itself,” Cinna says of the fragrance. The ultra-cool and laconic stylist gave Capitol Couture an exclusive first whiff. CINNA is boldly feminine, with notes of fresh violet, grey vetiver and bergamot underscored by mandarin. But the fragrance—which comes in a chic crystal flacon—alters its chemistry depending upon its exposure to natural light. At nightfall, the scent deepens with flourishes of sultry black orchid and smoky tobacco.

Of course, everyone wants to know the story behind the exquisite model seen in the ads for CINNA. “I picked her out of a crowd in the Capitol because of her spirit and natural beauty,” he says. “There are always champions among us.”

In celebration of these 100 Days we got another surprise! Coldplay has recorded ‘ATLAS’ a song specially for the upcoming Catching Fire. The song is scheduled to be available via iTunes and all digital retailers on 26 August, 2013.

Republic Records is again teaming up with Lionsgate to release the soundtrack in advance of Lionsgate distributing the film on screens worldwide on November 22, 2013.

“I have great respect and admiration for Coldplay, and we are thrilled with how well they have connected to the themes and ideas within the film,” said filmmaker Francis Lawrence. “Their unwavering passion and excitement for the project elevated the collaboration even further, and we can’t wait to share this music with audiences around the world.”

“We are so honored that Coldplay, one of the iconic rock bands of our generation, will perform the first song out on the new soundtrack,” said Tracy McKnight, Lionsgate’s Head of Film Music. “Knowing that Chris Martin is a fan of the books makes this even more meaningful. The Coldplay single underscores the stature of recording artists we’ve assembled for this powerful soundtrack.”

Monte Lipman, Chairman & CEO of Republic Records, stated, ”The creative alliance between Coldplay and The Hunger Games franchise will create a level of excitement and anticipation of epic proportions.” (x)

Liam Hemsworth talked CF on Jimmy Kimmel

We’ve all heard Francis say that CF is Katniss’ story and very little will change...Well, check out these three changes that EW says have been made to the adaptation. What do you think of the changes?:

1) “We made some changes to Peeta’s narrative,” says Lawrence. “We manned him up a little. And by the way it didn’t take a lot, just little choices to make here and there. The story doesn’t really change, his relationship with Katniss doesn’t change, he’s just a different kind of character.” For instance, in the book, the Hunger Games kicks off and Peeta is paralyzed when the other all-star tributes dive into the water. “The option is for either me drowning or sitting there like a cat batting my paw into the water,” says Josh Hutcherson with a laugh. “Either way the visual is horrible.” Easy fix: Let Peeta swim.

2) Goodbye Bonnie and Twill. In the book, Katniss stumbles upon the District 8 refugees in her father’s hunting cabin. There they reveal to a stunned Katniss the existence of District 13 and news of the spreading revolution our hero unintentionally sparked with her act of rebellion at the end of The Hunger Games. So the movie had to find a new way to introduce the news of District 13. “That’s fun,” says Lawrence, “figuring out new ways around things and new ways of doing things.”

3) Darius, we hardly know ye. District 12?s youngest peacekeeper, who pays dearly for intervening during that terrible scene of Gale’s public whipping, didn’t make the jump from page to screen. It’s another instance of storytellers having to drown one of their kittens. “It’s as agonizing for us to lose things from the book as it is for a fan,” says producer Nina Jacobson. “I want every single thing in there. But you know what? If you have to give up something in order to give more time to Katniss and Gale or to Effie as she starts to feel a conscience, you make the sacrifices in order to serve the characters and themes that are more essential.”

As the costume designer for Catching Fire, Trish Summerville, has on the most enviable and challenging jobs in cinema. Summerville sat down with Entertainment Weekly to talk the opportunities and struggles that come with a task like hers. Heavy is the hand that carries the sew needle!

What was the last look that you designed?

The last thing I designed would have been, I guess in Catching Fire, some of the looks in that are pretty intense, very colorful, so that was great fun because it took me completely into another world that’s not particularly my aesthetic. I like a lot of muted tones and unsaturated, washed out… and that was great because it propelled my mind to think in a really different manner because it is quite over the top. It’s kind of futuristic, but it’s not sci-fi on any level. It’s really bold and really colorful and quite campy at times, then it gets really serious. I tried to bring a little bit of darkness to it, you’re seeing a world that was already created in a book. You want to try to be really respectful to the writers, and you want to be respectful to the fan base, but then you also have to figure out what works visually and what you can bring to it as well. [And] I did the second installation so there’s certain things you want to be respectful about for the characters from the first one, but then also show a period of growth and transition.

I love the Peacekeepers that I did. I wanted to make them look a little more menacing, kind of insect-like. I draw a lot in my inspiration boards from different projects, a lot from nature, and animals, and insects. I just think that there’s so much there, in silhouettes and colors. The colors, they’re amazing, when you look in the insect world, and at in animals and nature. I wanted to make these Peacekeepers… after the first film, I felt like they needed to be bumped up a bit, because of what was going on in the second film with the rebellion that’s starting. I felt that we needed to show a transition, that the Capitol is stepping up its forces and making it much more intimidating and fearsome. So I went for this sort of spiny, praying mantis sort of look for them.

About your inspiration board, can you tell me what kinds of things are on it and how they inspire you?

For each project I do a new inspiration board. For Catching Fire I think we had probably 30, 40, 60 inspiration boards, because I did them for every district and every kind of character we had. On my personal board I have some photographs of native Americans, the Maasai tribe up, which I love, the east Indian painted elephants used for weddings and ceremonies.

Whether it’s for my designs or for my own aesthetic pleasure I’m really drawn to, tribal, native, cultural ways of dress. They’re so interesting and intricate, and generally have beadwork and metalwork. I also like the ideas that there’s this traditional, ceremonial fashion, but also this function. Like, I just recently purchased an image from a water.org benefit and they do this hike up Kilimanjaro to raise consciousness about clean water. There was this image that I just loved, and it was probably 20 Maasai women, in white beading and accessories, and I just loved that they all have on contemporary shoes. People go there and trade things for their jewelry and their cloth and things like that, and so this image is just all these beautiful Maasai women in traditional garb, but then they’re all wearing sneakers and flip flops. I like that. I like that they’ll make bracelets out of Coca-Cola cans. They take what they have and then make it functional and use very interesting forms of adornment.

What else is on your personal board right now?

I have an image of an Iris van Herpen dress.

How does that inspire you?

That one inspires me just because, it looks very insect-like. It’s so modern but it’s really structural, and I love the silhouette of it. It’s very extreme. I have some [pictures of] Haider Ackermann designs. I think he’s really genius and really chic, and his clothes are quite beautiful and really sexy. I have pictures of rocks and stones because I’m interested in doing a jewelry line. I’ve been doing some sketches, and on my table I have a lot of loose stones and rocks. There’s a piece of barbed wire from a bracelet I made. And then, on the funny side of me, there are some inspirational quotes that I put up from time to time. I have a picture of Obama and the Dalai Lama, some family photos.

What are you working on next?

I’m working on a movie, hopefully next year. It’s under wraps still. I’m crossing my fingers it’s shooting in [Los Angeles], which would be amazing. I live in Los Angeles. I hear the talk of Old Hollywood and how everything was shot here, but now so much stuff is shot outside of town. (X)

Sam Claflin (Finnick Odair) and Jena Malone (Johanna Mason) were both featured in a beautiful shoot for Glamour magazine. Of course they talked Catching Fire, being new on the set, and their characters. Check out the behind the scenes video!

Jena Malone:

Glamour: Those are some really major eyelashes in the movie.

Jena Malone: I wish I could rock them in real life! They were like five inches long.

Glamour: You’ve had some extreme looks in your own life too.

Jena Malone: When I was 18, I shaved my head. I was bald. Then I had a mohawk – for a job that fell through.

Glamour: Was your part in The Hunger Games tough to get?

Jena Malone: I know they saw every single actress from here till Tuesday. They wanted to find someone who didn’t just physicalize this character but could also scare people. I don’t know what I did – I guess I just scared the hell out of them.

Sam Claflin:

Glamour: Was getting this role like its own Hunger Games?

Sam Claflin: Finnick is supposed to be this godlike creature. I remember sitting in the audition room and this kid walked in. He was seriously one of the most handsome men I’ve ever seen. And I was, Nah, this is never going to happen.

Glamour: How did you transform yourself into an Adonis?

Sam Claflin: I had chicken and asparagus everyday for three months. My girlfriend was quite happy.

Glamour: Did you take pics?

Sam Claflin: I was sending my mom photos of myself, really buff. (Laughs.) That sounds so wrong. (X)

A new still of Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) was released this week by Lionsgate CMO, Tim Palen, during his interview with Scribd.

JM: HOW CHALLENGING WAS IT TO APPEAL TO A WIDE AUDIENCE IN A MOVIE LIKE THE HUNGER GAMES?

There were a lot of challenges in marketing a belovedbook especially knowing that it was the first of four films in a series. The best decision we made was to take our queues from the book – and we consider the words of Suzanne Collins to be our bible in marketing the film.The Hunger Games is a story about a reluctant hero who is forced into a world of violence and how institutionalized violence (i.e. war) changes everyone. One of the biggest challenges fundamentally was how to handle the notion of kids killing kids. The books do not glorify violence and Katniss is not a killer. Sensationalizing that aspect of the story would be contrary to the core message of the books and we believed that it would be alienating to a huge part of the audience that love the books and that would love the movie.

JM: WHAT WAS THE FIRST CAMPAIGN YOU SHOT? CAN YOU TALK ABOUT A RECENT SHOOT AND HOW YOUR PROCESS WORKS?

Most recently I shot the campaign for HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE. Because I also shot the campaign for the first HUNGER GAMES I have gotten to know the talent and there’s a certain level of trust and familiarity that has added a level of magic to the campaigns.

As a general rule, a photographer has a short window of time to connect with an actor and make them feelcomfortable and safe and taken care of – most times it’s a matter of hours from the time they show up at the studio for

hair/makeup before you have to dive right in. I think that’sone of the advantages of my job – I get to connect withthe people I’m working with on a more intimate level thanmost marketing executives. It’s something I’m grateful for and something I never take for granted.

JM: WHAT ARE THE SPECIFIC QUALIFIERS TO TAKE INTOACCOUNT WITH YOUR NEXT MARKETING CAMPAIGN…YOU JUST RELEASED THE FIRST TEASER FOR CATCHING FIRE(WHICH GOT OVER 28M VIEWS IN A LITTLE OVER A WEEK) BUTI’M SURE THERE WERE MANY CHALLENGES.

The launch of the teaser trailer for CATCHING FIRE was a hugely pivotal moment in the ongoing HUNGER GAMES campaign. Because we have a franchise across four films, each piece is just part of thelarger puzzle, and this step was even more crucial because we had such great success on the first film. At the same time we have a new director (Francis Lawrence), a new editor,a new cinematographer and a new costume designer.

So I really needed this first glimpse of the second film to work hard to reassure the fan base that the characters they know and love are back and that the integrity we showed withthe first movie is still intact. But almost equally important for me was to show that the stakes are higher, the drama will be greater and that CATCHING FIRE will betaking the story of our reluctant hero Katniss Everdeen to a whole other level. I’m grateful that Francis Lawrence has delivered a gigantic movie that has so many rich and amazing pieces for me to play with. He’s really made my job a fun and easy one.

Probably the most satisfying thing I saw after the release of the teaser was a fan comment on one of the blogs that posted the trailer. I tend to be overly obsessive about reading and monitoring real fan reaction to the materials. This one comment did the most to reassure me that we had hit the mark with the new teaser trailer: “Shit’s getting real.” It doesn’t get better than that. (X)
