Boyhood is more than just a film; it’s a glimpse into someone’s life. The idea of filming a movie over the course of 12 years using the same actors sounds ridiculous and gimmicky, but Richard Linklater commits to the idea as a whole and creates one of the best movies I’ve seen. Period.

The film focuses on six-year-old Mason (Ellar Coltrane) as he grows up over the years and goes through the typical milestones and young boy would experience, like falling in love for the first time and getting ready to attend college. Even though it’s a work of fiction, it’s a very personal journey that encompasses everything we experience growing up.

Boyhood opens as a window into the past. Mason is your typical kid who enjoys watching Dragon Ball Z on TV or playing the Game Boy Advance. It’s these pop culture icons that inform the audience what time frame they’re looking at. The film doesn’t hold your hand in telling the story. It doesn’t scream, “Hey, it’s now 2 or 3 years later!” but rather flows smoothly in its narrative. It never explicitly says what year you’re looking at, but you can immediately tell just by scene.

Growing up alongside Mason are his sister Smantha (Lorelei Linklater), his mother Olivia (Patricia Arquette), and his oftentimes away father Mason Sr. (Ethan Hawke). They each have their own narratives, but the story ultimately revolves around Mason. Over the course of the 12 years, Olivia will go through multiple marriages and husbands as they move around Texas, and each will have their own impact on Mason.

It’s easy to form an attachment with these characters because you’re watching the same actors grow and develop over the course of filming. Six-year-old Ellar is vastly different from 18-year-old Ellar, and Boyhood captures all those little moments that make the difference. This is what sets the film apart from everything else. That’s something you can’t capture by using different actors to portray a character at different ages. In a way, the actors are their respective characters.

Boyhood is a perfect film in every sense of the word. It’s a brilliantly executed technical masterpiece that captures the essence of what it’s like growing up. There’s never a dull moment. Boyhood is one of those films that comes around every few decades at most. There’s absolutely nothing like it.
