Kitty is reaching the age that society frowns upon for not yet being wed and her parents take matters into their own hands by setting her up with Dr. Walter Fane.  However Kitty finds Walter to be stiff, boring, and even a little weak. After their marriage Walter’s job takes them to China and introduces Kitty to a new world and Charlie Townsend. Their flirtations build to an affair that is soon discovered by Walter. Hurt by the fact that his love is unreturned and his wife has committed adultery Walter takes a job in a little village rampant with cholera. Surrounded by death Kitty and Walter are forced to deal with each other and slowly start to understand each other and even start to feel love.

”The Painted Veil” has a very vintage feel which having been filmed already in 1934 probably gave this version some direction. The cinematography is breathtaking and might even outshine the story at times. The movie requires some patience from the viewer; but what you get is a captivating tale of heartbreak, love, and redemption. You can probably guess the ending; but it is the journey there that makes it worth while. This just further proves that a happy ending is not needed to have a beautiful love story.
