What's a small town pharmacist to do when his life isn't going the way he dreamed? That's the tale that Better Living Through Chemistry tells and it tells it very well.

Sam Rockwell is Doug Varney, the small town pharmacist. He's just bought out his father-in-law's interest in the local store, and the insufferable man has the gall to insist that since people know the name, Bishop's, that it should stay, leaning Doug owning a store that doesn't even bear his name. His wife is overbearing, and his son is getting in trouble at school, and all of it leaves him trudging through life, hoping only to make it to the next day but never looking forward to it.

Until he meets Elizabeth, a lonely trophy wife, with whom he begins an affair, and who convinces him to pilfer a few chemicals from the phamacy to enhance their trists. Soon Doug is adding chemistry to other facets of his life, and figuring out what it is he wants from life and not just what he can give to other people.

There is only one hitch... Elizabeth casually mentions that perhaps, maybe, if her husband with a heart condition were to get the wrong prescription, then the two of them might run off together.

Other reviewers have turned up their nose at this, admittedly, pedestrian plot. They call it safe and stale. But for me, the beauty of this film is in watching Sam Rockwell take Doug through his journey of a subsistance kind of life into one of excess and back to a stable good life that makes him happy.

Better Living Through Chemistry isn't likely to knock your socks off, but I throughly enjoyed the time I spent with it.

Machine Gun Preacher sounds like some B-movie action hero who spends his days preaching in church and his evenings ridding the streets of crime with his massive machine gun. Sounds pretty cool, doesn’t it? Well, that’s not exactly what Machine Gun Preacher is about. No, this film actually has a story and a purpose.

It tells the true life story of Sam Childers (Gerard Butler), a former gang member and criminal who turned towards God and took it upon himself to defend children in Sudan from the terrorizing forces of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). Building an orphanage in the middle of a civil warzone is no easy task as it will test every last ounce of faith Sam has.

The film starts out with Sam before he met God, showing how crazy and criminal his life was before his epiphany. That’s good and all but the transition from evil Sam to good Sam is a little ridiculous. One evening his shooting up with his best friend and stabbing a homeless guy, and then the next morning he’s in church getting baptized. It’s too quick of a change, making it difficult to believe that this gang member has truly turned a new leaf.

Once Sam travels to Sudan, that’s when things start to become intense. Machine Gun Preacher is a rollercoaster of emotions that cover the entire spectrum from happy to sad to disgust. The film sheds light on a subject that isn’t really covered much in today’s society. It’s a conflict that’s still continuing to this day in fact.

There are plenty of disturbing scenes in the film, many of which involve the slaughter of innocent children. At times it can be difficult to believe that it’s actually based on a true story and is not just from the imagination of a screenwriter. It does make you wonder if they went a little overboard with some of the characters, specifically Sam, and make them appear larger than life.

Machine Gun Preacher has its ups and downs but ends on a high note. You’ll be enraptured by the Sudan and all the children who inhabit Sam’s orphanage. Each one will no doubt bring a smile to your face.
