Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, “Iron Man 3” is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce and Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968.

In Marvel’s “Iron Man 3,” Tony Stark/Iron Man finds his world reduced to rubble by a malevolent enemy and must use his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him as he seeks to destroy the enemy and his cohorts.

Iron Man gets a third outing fresh from his team-up with The Avengers in this Marvel Studios production. Robert Downey Jr. once again stars, with Shane Black helming from a script he cowrote with Drew Pierce that takes it's cues from Warren Ellis' Extremis comic mini-series. Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, and Rebecca Hall join the returning cast of Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle.

THE AWAKENING:
Professional non-believer and author Florence Cathcart (played by Rebecca Hall) spends her time rooting out con artists that use people who are in mourning over a loss of a loved one. Florence does not believe in ghosts or spirits and she really dislikes anyone who tries to make others believe they are there through tricks and hoaxs. But her beliefs are put to the test when she is approached by Professor Robert Malory (played by Dominic West) who proclaims that the boarding school he works at is truely haunted. Florence declines at first believing that the hauntings are just cruel pranks by the school boys but after learning that one boy recently died at the school Florence goes to investigate. While at the school Florence discovers more than what she had first believed that will make her question her beliefs as well as her sanity.

OLD SCHOOL GHOST:
You know what's hard to find these days? A good horror film that makes you scared instead of what we now get which is some crazy person going around killing people in sick and disgusting ways with lots of blood and gore. People need to be reminded what a real horror film is, a movie that scares you, one that makes you jump, or one that has you afraid to sleep at night without the light on. The Awakening is one of those old horror films, which are now called thrillers, but it's a horror movie that makes you scared while watching it. I'll admit there where times that I got the hibby jibbies while watching The Awakening and I loved that feeling (ok I also hate it cause it made me look around my empty room). This movie does what I like in horror movies, it took a simple theory of a ghost haunting a school and made it spooky enough to get to me.

The Awakening's plot is an old one, take someone that doesn’t believe there are ghosts and show them ghosts. They also use the ghost in the tried and true fashion by putting in spooky see through no descript images on photos, flashing glimpses of the ghost in a mirror, and by quick cuts where we see them behind or near the character(s) and then gone. These methods work because they are still and will always be scary because it shows the unseen (and for me the I really don't want to know that they are there so they can remain unseen) images that scare us. That format is used quite well in The Awakening by having the ghost of a kid appearing around the school where it did make me a little creeped out.

Though as good as the plot is leading up to the ending, what makes this movie one that was fun to watch was the acting and the look of it. Set in 1921 England the setting is made to be during that time and it really looks that way. The boarding school, the wardrobe, and even the dialog are set to that time era and are pulled off nicely. I was impressed with the way everything looks old as well as how the lighting is overcast and gray to give it that feel like this is old and set so long ago. The Awakening has a believable look to it but the performance of Rebecca Hall as the skeptic who ends up believing was one of the shining points to this movie. She put a lot of effort into making this character likable and real as she quickly is made to realize that what she's believed her whole life and what she wrote about is not true. All the cast does a splendid job with their characters where we get a story being backed up by actors who know how to bring a character to life. What I didn't like was how the movie ends, though I won't say more than that so I don't give away the ending, but it was not one I agree with.

THE AWAKENING BLU RAY:
The Awakening has a decent picture quality to it where it almost looks like it's an old film but with sharp clear colors and details. One thing I noticed though was that at times there was a lot of grain and noise in the picture where some times there wasn't any. Typically seen in the blacks of a picture, which a lot of times this is the case in The Awakening, there is noise in the whites as well and it covers the whole picture. It's not bad but it's clearly noticeable but because the plot is set during 1921 it almost lends some credibility to the movie. One thing the Blu Ray does well is bring out the age in a film that is new. The colors are sharp and clear but they still have that overcast tone to them that makes the movie look old and a little cold. The fine detail stands out a lot that can be seen when the dollhouse scene is playing as well as some close up shots of Rebecca Hall. The Awakening has a better audio track that gives a near even level to the dialog, the sound effects, and music without any of them over stepping each other.

For every so-called ghostly encounter there are about a dozen or so hoaxes that exist. Set in 1921, The Awakening follows Florence Cathcart (Rebecca Hall) as she travels to a dilapidated boarding school that is said to be haunted by a child who died there long ago. It’s her job to debunk the case and find the culprit responsible. That is, unless there really is a ghost haunting the premises of course.

Florence is one of the first ghost hunters in modern history, at least that’s what I can tell. She’s a skeptic who believes that there’s a reasonable explanation for everything. In this case, it’s probably one of the students messing about. She plans to catch this troublemaker with a variety of tools such as tripwire cameras, bells, and newspaper with powder in front of walkways. By today’s standards that might seem weak but you have to remember that this is 1921 we’re talking about. She’s one of the best ghost hunters in the business, having already written a book detailing her experiences. No book or fancy technology can prepare for what she’s about to encounter, however.

The Awakening features many of the usual horror tricks of the trade with figures suddenly appearing out of thin air or chilling sounds echoing throughout the vast hallways. The boarding school acts as a perfect location for a haunting. Dimly lit rooms and eerie shadows play tricks on the mind and the antique look of the place adequately reflects the time period. We’re used to seeing ghost hunters use EVP recorders, night vision cameras, and all sorts of fancy equipment. It’s interesting to see some of the same techniques used but in a much older setting. Ghostly apparitions in photos for instance, can be explained by someone using the 15 second time delay of a camera flash to cast a shadowy image in the picture.

Towards the end of the film, things begin to take a more haunting turn as questions become answers. It soon focuses more on the disturbing story involved rather than the cheap thrills of the cinematography. There are a few “ah ha” moments that’ll have you looking back on the film in a different light. It’s a shame that the buildup towards the beginning is so slow. Be prepared for some dull moments as the film attempts to build the suspense. There are a few scenes where the scares are few and far between.

The Awakening can’t help but feel a bit old-fashioned but deep within it are some justifiably frightening moments. The atmosphere of the film is its highlight, with the boarding school fitting perfectly into the drab setting for a horror film. While it doesn’t push the genre to any new heights, The Awakening will have you double checking the halls before you turn in for the night.

Boston bank robber Doug MacRay (Ben Affleck) falls for a woman his gang had previously taken hostage after feigning a chance meeting with her to ensure that she can't identify them in Affleck's adaptation of author Chuck Hogan's novel Prince of Thieves. The son of a tough Charlestown, MA thief, Doug passed on his chance to walk the straight and narrow in favor of becoming a career bank robber. Not only is Doug's crew one of the most ruthless in Boston, but they're also one of the best; they never leave a trace of evidence, and always make a clean break. Hollywood heavyweight Ron Howard adapts playwright Peter Morgan's West End hit for the silver screen with this feature focusing on the 1977 television interviews between journalist David Frost (Michael Sheen) and former president Richard Nixon (Frank Langella). At the time Nixon sat down with Frost to discuss the sordid details that ultimately derailed his presidency, it had been three years since the former commander in chief had been forced out of office. The Watergate scandal was still fresh in everyone's minds, and Nixon had remained notoriously tight-lipped until he agreed to sit down with Frost. Nixon was certain that he could hold his own opposite the up-and-coming British broadcaster, and even Frost's own people weren't quite sure their boss was ready for such a high-profile interview. When the interview ultimately got under way and each man eschewed the typical posturing in favor of the simple truth, fans and critics on both sides were stunned by what they witnessed. Instead of Nixon stonewalling the interviewer as expected, or Frost lobbing softballs as the truth-seekers feared, what emerged was an unguardedly honest exchange between a man who had lost everything and another with everything to gain.
