FX has a history of doing high-concept dramas. Successes like The Shield or Sons of Anarchy to short-lived shows like The Riches (vastly underrated in my opinion) demonstrate that FX isn't afraid of pushing genres to the extreme. The latest FX program The Bridge continues this tradition with its own spin on the pursuit of a serial killer.

Admittedly, when I was assigned the episode "Old Friends" of The Bridge to preview I had to do a bit of research. I'm a television-addict particularly when it comes to FX series’, but I had let The Bridge slip between the cracks. Having been subjected to umpteen commercials during the last season of Justified, I was turned off by the amount of hype. I'm not sure if it was the setting between the Texas/Mexico border or the lack of stars attached to the series, but I worried about investing my time into a show that could head towards cancellation. I haven't even mentioned the fact that The Bridge is based on the Danish/Swedish program of the same name that is currently airing overseas. Apparently, networks are so hungry for ideas that they are willing to base new programs off of shows that are still currently airing (see Broadchurch).

Readers who aren’t caught up with The Bridge should probably turn away now as my preview contains spoilers revealed in previous installments of the program. You’ve been warned. In the last episode, Detective Cross (Diane Kruger, National Treasure) was involved in a car crash while watching over Detective Ruiz’s son Gus. The perpetrator of the accident, serial killer David Tate (Eric Lange, Victorious) quickly kidnaps Gus to further torture Ruiz (Demian Bichir, A Better Life). Meanwhile, journalist Daniel Frye (Matthew Lillard, Scooby-Doo) falls into a relapse and is urged by a fellow reporter to attend the local AA meeting.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about The Bridge is the cultural smorgasbord. Scenes move quickly between English speaking characters and then jumps to Spanish speaking characters with subtitles. This could run the risk of turning some viewers off, but it certainly adds a sense of realism to the program. For those who are unfamiliar with the show, I wouldn’t suggest jumping onboard at episode ten. You might be able to catch up via on-demand or an FX marathon showing at some point, but your chances are probably slim. Fans who know what to expect from FX dramas will become intrigued by The Bridge and should check out the eventual first season release.

Their investigation is complicated by the rampant corruption and general apathy among the Mexican authorities and the violence of the powerful borderland drug cartels. The show title refers to the Bridge of the Americas that serves as a border crossing between El Paso, Texas and Juárez, Chihuahua, the setting of the series.

While covering the events taking place in Afghanistan, war correspondent Elsa Casanova (played by Diane Kruger) writes an article about a local Taliban leader Ahmed Zaief (played by Raz Degan). Taking the article as a disrespect, Zaief captures Elsa and her coworker taking them deep into the Afghanistan territory. After a tape of Zaief having Elsa’s partner killed gets out, a Special Forces team is dispatched to find and rescue her before she’s killed. This elite force is able to find Elsa but when the extraction goes horribly wrong, the team must fight their way on foot the Afghanistan wilderness while being hunted by the terrorist group lead by Zaief.
