Production Set to Begin on ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’

Production is set to begin next month on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, 20th Century Studios has announced. The sequel set within the Planet of the Apes franchise will be directed by Wes Ball and stars Owen Teague, Freya Allen, and Peter Macon. It will be released in 2024.

Kingdom is set to pick up many years after the events of 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes. If you recall, the film ended with the death of Caesar as the apes began setting up a new home following their victory over humanity. Judging by the state of decay in the concept art for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, nature has overtaken much of the land as the apes continue to flourish.

Steve Asbell, President 20th Century Studios said, “Planet of the Apes is one of the most iconic and storied science fiction franchises in film history, as well as being an indelible part of our studio’s legacy. With Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes we are privileged to continue the series’ tradition of imaginative, thought-provoking cinema, and can’t wait to share Wes’ extraordinary vision for this new chapter with audiences in 2024.”

While the film will still be set in the Rise trilogy of films that director Matt Reeves and follow Caesar’s legacy, it’s likely that most of the story will be completely fresh. The screenplay is by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, and Patrick Aison.
