Xolo Maridueña Suits Up as Jaime Reyes in ‘Blue Beetle’ Trailer

Written by Matt Rodriguez

DC has released the first trailer for its anticipated superhero film Blue Beetle featuring Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, a teenager who gains superpowers after interacting with mysterious alien scarab. The film is the 14th in the DC Extended Universe following the recent release of Shazam: Fury of the Gods, and is set for release on August 18, 2023. Check out the trailer below.

As seen in the trailer, after coming into contact with the scarab Jaime Reyes becomes the host for the Blue Beetle, an alien exoskeleton that comes with a variety of powers and weapons designed to protect whoever wears the suit. “Whatever you can imagine I can create,” the AI voice tells Jaime as he assembles what looks to be a sword inspired by Cloud’s Buster Sword from the Final Fantasy VII video games. Blue Beetle also stars Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Trujillo, and Susan Sarandon.

Like Zachary Levi’s Shazam, the future of this particular iteration of Blue Beetle is still up in the air following last year’s restructuring of DC Studios. There have been no current announcements of Maridueña’s Jamie Reyes being a part of James Gunn’s and Peter Safran’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters resetting of the DC Universe, although he hasn’t been ruled out either. More than likely, that decision depends on how the film does at the box office and audience reception. What do you think of the Blue Beetle trailer, and are you excited to see the film in August?
