Kaitlyn Dever, who starred in productions such as Dopesick, Booksmart, and just last year the terrifying No One Will Save You, is joining the cast of HBO’s The Last of Us for season 2. She will play the role of Abby, a fellow post apocalyptic survivor who plays a vital role in the story moving forward.
The series is based on the PlayStation video game by the same name and follows Joel (Pedro Pascal) as he smuggles a young girl named Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across the country to a group of rebels known as the Fireflies. The two bond on their journey together and soon find a bigger purpose in life in a world that has become overrun with fungus infected zombies who ravage what’s left of humanity.
“Our casting process for season two has been identical to season one: we look for world-class actors who embody the souls of the characters in the source material,” said Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, The Last of Us‘ co-creators, writers, executive producers and directors. “Nothing matters more than talent, and we’re thrilled to have an acclaimed performer like Kaitlyn join Pedro, Bella and the rest of our family.”
The first season of The Last of Us reached critical acclaim with both critics and audiences and directly adapts the first game in the series. A second season was ordered by HBO in January 2023, continuing from where the story left off. It’s a pretty safe bet to say that the second season will cover the events of The Last of Us: Part II, which was released on the PS4 in June 2020. Without going into spoilers, Abby plays a central role in the game alongside Joel and Ellie.
Filming of the second season was originally supposed to begin in 2023 but both the writers and actors strike delayed production until 2024. The second season will premiere sometime in 2025.
