Heart

Alexz Johnson is a singer/ songwriter originally from Vancouver, BC Canada, but is now based in Brooklyn, NY. She has also appeared in several TV shows and movies and even won a Gemini (Canadian Emmy) Award. Her sound has been described as a mix between Stevie Nicks, Adele, and Bruce Sprinsteen. However, I think she sounds more like a mix between Sara Bareilles and Leona Lewis. Hew newest EP, “Heart” was released on February 18.

She has a great voice and she has great vocal range, but I did hear her struggle a bit with the higher notes. Her lyrics are powerful and full of raw emotion, but the songs overall lack variety. I know there are only 4 songs on the EP, but I would have wanted to see her try out different styles to fully showcase her talents. On the other hand, the songs are empowering and catchy and will be attractive to certain audiences. “Thank You For Breaking My Heart” really stood out and piqued my interest enough to give her another chance when she releases more material. She is a talented artist, but needs to show different sides of her to give her audience the full experience. For those reasons, I am giving this EP a “C+.”
