New Line Picks up Jack Black-Will Ferrell Comedy 'Tag'

New Line has won a bidding war to pick up Tag, a comedy pitch with Jack Black and Will Ferrell attached to star.

Todd Garner and his Broken Road banner are attached to produce. Dave Neustadter and Walter Hamada will oversee for New Line.

The script is based on a Wall Street Journal article titled "Tag Brothers" and followed 10 classmates from a Spokane, Wash., prep school who, now in their 40s, play an elaborate game of tag for one month of the year.

Mark Steilen is attached to pen the script.

The package hit the studios last week and in a slow burn attracted several buyers. In the end, the bidding came down to DreamWorks and New Line.

The duo’s involvement is subject not only to scheduling but on the script, which has yet to be written. But if it comes to pass, it will be the first time the two comedians will have worked together beyond Black’s cameo in Ferrell’s Anchorman.

Steilen has worked as a second unit director on the Farrelly brothers comedies Hall Pass and The Three Stooges, but his passion lies in screenwriting. He has project set up at Sony, Universal and Disney. He is repped by ICM Partners, Mosaic and Stone Meyer.
