Neil Patrick Harris to Host Emmys for Second Time

Neil Patrick Harris is CBS' hosting go-to guy.

The How I Met Your Mother star has signed on to host the Emmy Awards for the second time, CBS announced Wednesday.

The news comes three weeks after Harris signed on to host the June 9 Tony Awards -- marking his fourth time overseeing Broadway's biggest night for the network.

“Neil is the quintessential host -- engaging, entertaining and a true showman -- with a passion for celebrating the medium we all love. We’re thrilled for him to return for CBS’ broadcast of the Emmy Awards,” CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler said in a statement announcing the news.

Harris -- who will also produce the ceremony -- last hosted the Emmys in 2009, earning critical praise for his musically infused performance. The Harris-hosted awards telecast saw a ratings spike, ranking as the most-watched Emmys since 2006, when it scored 13.3 million total viewers, according to Nielsen.

“Four years ago, Neil was an amazing Emmy host and we are excited to have him back,” said Television Academy chairman and CEO Bruce Rosenblum. “Neil is an extremely gifted and inventive performer, and we look forward to seeing what he has in store this year.”

The 65th annual Primetime Emmys will air live from Los Angeles' Staples Center on Sunday, Sept. 22, on CBS. The Tonys, meanwhile, are set for June 9.

“I couldn't be more honored and excited to be hosting this year's Emmy Awards,” Harris said. “And what perfect timing -- I'll just do the exact same script I'm about to use for the Tonys. ‘And the Emmy for best revival of a musical goes to Breaking Bad!’ See, told you it works.”
