If you want to see Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland in theaters, you'd better start planning a date now. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has to decided to test its new approach to movie releases by asking U.S. and U.K. exhibitors to run the film for less than 13 weeks versus the usual 16.
THR adds that: The studio would benefit by truncating the film's theatrical run as the title is a near sure shot for big success in home entertainment with its family-friendly subject matter and well-known cast. So the quicker Disney can get it into DVD and Blu-ray Disc release the better.
While I understand this reasoning, it seems to run counter to the logic behind releasing the film not only in 2D but in RealD and IMAX 3-D as well. I had assumed that Alice in Wonderland was intent upon becoming a theatrical event much like Avatar has been the past couple of months, but it seems like Disney's CEO Bob Iger is intent upon moving Alice out of theaters and into homes as soon as possible despite the lure it could have as a 3-D film.
