Early returns at the Friday box office show new entries Rock of Ages and That's My Boy coming in behind holdovers Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted and Ridley Scott's Prometheus over Father's Day weekend. Madagascar 3, from DreamWorks Animation and Paramount, could gross as much as $33 million to $36 million for the weekend following a $10 million to $11 million Friday, far and away the best showing of any film. Ridley Scott's Prometheus, also entering its second frame, could post a weekend gross in the $21 million to $23 million range for 20th Century Fox. Adam Shankman's film adaptation of Broadway musical Rock of Ages -- featuring an all-star cast including Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand -- is expected to gross in the $7 million range on Friday for a weekend opening of $18 million to $21 million, according to early numbers. From New Line and Warner Bros., Rock of Ages likely won't match the levels of previous summer musicals Hairspray -- also from Shankman and New Line -- and Mamma Mia, both of which opened just north of $25 million. Warners and New Line are counting on Rock of Ages to have good legs. Adam Sandler's R-rated summer comedy That's My Boy, also starring Andy Samberg, is likely to land at No. 4 with a weekend opening in the $14 million to $17 million range if it continues on the same pace. That's lower than many of Sandler's summer movies, although the majority of his films have been broad comedies. That's My Boy, from Sony, should get a boost from Father's Day. Title: Rock of Ages |
